I was reading with interest all the comments on putting Lortone lids on and taking them off. I plan on buying a Lortone QT66 in the near future. I think it would go well with my Thumler model B. I like the way the lid design is on the model B. Six studs with wing nuts. As long as your gasket is good and you tighten it evenly, you won't have any leaks and removing the lid is easy. However on the smaller Thumler barrels the design, in my opinion, is very poor. A plastic disk in the middle sealed around the outside with an o-ring keeping the barrel tight around the circumference of the disk. I used to have leaking problems with my first little Thumler. I have never used a Lortone machine so I'm not sure exactly how the lid seal works. Do these barrels have a leaking problem or any other problems I should know about before I buy one? What about the lifespan of the barrels and lids? Thanks, Bob

hi all ---bob i have used lortone since i started, the whole thing with them is to fight the urge to over tightin the nut because it pulls the seal outta the barrel into the lid and they pop off i havent had a leak yet and there quiet enuff i have two QT66-s and aQT12 goin now sounds like a babling brook in here hahahaha, as for wear i realy havent had them long enuff to tell ya that but so far i see no wear after acouple months im also thinking about gettin a 15lb thumlers i like the design on the barrels and the load weight would make a great rough grind tumbler im sure ok seeya----john

I have had the lid on my 4.5 fall off Twice? ? Messy, but don't know what I did wrong. I have tighted it up a bit and I think that was it for me. The design is better than Thumlers...I think. Fewer leaks as the lid compresses the lip into the rubber seal, similar to the white plastic plate Thumler uses. The Thumler lid is wearing to the point I can see light through it from running 60/90 in it all the time. My other one accually wore through. Looks like someone popped a 9mm through 'dead center'. But I sure like the design on the Thumler 15# mobel 'B'. I just use it for rough. The Lortone 4.5 seems to hava a smoother, slower rotation. For what thats worth- ;D

I guess if I'm just going to use the QT66 for pre-polish and polish it should be OK.

If I grok what I did wrong, you can see with a (mostly empty) coffee can. Take the lid off and then push gently in the center. The lid snaps back on. Now PUSH in the center. The lids edges pop off the can rim.

I have 3 QT6 barrels and I have not had any problems, I am careful about having the edge clean when reassembling them and try not to have them to full (that and having the grit too thick is most of my trouble) If all goes well I plan on getting a QT12 barrel next.
