Hi, just found this site while looking on Google for bearings for one of my lapidary machines. Nice site here!! I'm older guy in late '50's. I've been making sludge for almost 30 years. My family lived in Brazil for 3 and a half years when I was very young. My father had a rock collector friend there who got me interested in collecting. Got my first machine ( diamond demon) for Christmas from my wife's family close to 30 years back and still use the same machine today!!! Along with some others of course but it is still my favorite. It's so loud that I need to wear ear protection, hence the needing of new bearings.
So here I am. My name is Ken.

Hello and welcome to the forum! I am a Texan also but transplanted to Wickenburg, Arizona about 5 years ago. What part of Texas are you in? I am headed to Odessa, TX to see my grandson next week for his 3rd birthday!!

Wow, thank you folks for the warm welcome!!! I'm in Austin. Looks like we have people from all over. This looks like a fun site!! I almost thought lapidary was a dieing art, it's so nice to see so many people interested in it. I've seen some of you guys pictures and think there is some really talented people here. I'm casting today so babysitting the kiln all day. Hi Jean, cool crystal ball you made by hand!! Hi Shotgunner, grizman, plumberinaz, sheltie, vegasjames, kk, jamesp, roy, and Rockhobbit!! Hmm adventure pics...I'll try to dig some up, heh heh. Rockhobbit happy birthday to your grandson!!! They are so cute at that age!! Arizona seems like a good place to be if you have to leave Texas. Thanks again!!

My forum name is kinda weird, I couldn't think of anything original so I used initials of my facebook page which is Kenny rocks old time lapidary. I'll probably change it later.

I'm just up I-35 from you in Georgetown. Right in the heart of barren land for decent rocks unless you like fossils and flint. Anything else you have to drive a ways for.

Hi John. I wish I had land outside Austin. It sure is beautiful. I have a house in north Austin. Thanks for the welcome!!
I guess we are expected to show pics or our work. I used to cut calibrated stones for the most part to put in standard settings.
Only the past 2 years have I really tried fabricating my own silver settings and casting as well so I'm still learning and have the old habit of standard shapes, lol.
I don't think it worked.
ok I'll figure out how to post pics later.....

I found a cool fossil at Lake Georgetown once. But true there's not much to find around here. A trip to just south of Alpine would be fun. Not sure how played out Woodward is these days but there are other places to collect out there near the creosote bushes and the weeping junipers lol. I still have some rocks I collected with Austin gem and mineral society on the other side of Woodward but off their property. That was back in the '90's.

I was down there last year and there's still plenty to be found. Just have to look a little harder.
