Small world isn't it? I found a cool fossil at Lake Georgetown once. But true there's not much to find around here. A trip to just south of Alpine would be fun. Not sure how played out Woodward is these days but there are other places to collect out there near the creosote bushes and the weeping junipers lol. I still have some rocks I collected with Austin gem and mineral society on the other side of Woodward but off their property. That was back in the '90's. I was down there last year and there's still plenty to be found. Just have to look a little harder. Last year? Too cool!! I want to go back some day, it's just fun being out there and of course having chips and chili macho at a local eatery is always nice. I've found some nice calcite in down in Terlingua just laying on the ground. Almost perfect rhombs!! I love west Texas!!

I have about 35-40 lbs of rainbow obsidian and although I can see the color in the rough, when I slab it, it isn't there. This is the most frustrating piece of rough I've ever tried. I've tried slabbing parallel, perpendicular to the "lines". and at a 7 - 15 degree angle to perpendicular to no avail. I've taken a seven lb piece of rough, slabbed at every angle imaginable and still nothing. I wonder if the color is there but just needs to be polished? GRRR!!
I sure like that piece of rainbow obsidian you have though.

Make sure to line up the lines on as many sides (at least 2) as you can when you slab. Almost all of the rainbow I have cut and it's been considerable, has it's color in layers. Kinda like layers in plywood. That's the best way to picture it in your mind, like plywood. In fact that's why I always cut a bulls eye stone from it. It's cool stuff, no matter what curves in the shape you make, the layers will ( almost always) make a bulls eye and the color will follow and frame the shape as long as you cut an even dome cab very perpendicular to the lines. But even if you're way off you should see chatoyency color. Would you show a picture of some of your pieces here for us to see? I am an obsidian junkie lol.

A couple more rainbow. I have run across some with only one color in the past but they seem to always have some flash.
