it looks to me like that is the ammonite. The squigglies are the walls between the chambers. See how they get smaller and closer together?

I want to save ss much of the stone as I can and remove the fossil. Is the fossil within the stone ir is it all fosdil.

Ok now I am excited, I can see th amonite along th very edgeof the "CRITTER". sorry I'm not sure whst to call it This is going to be a delicate operation.

It looked like we were seeing the side of the thing itself. Those squiggles are part of the outer shell. I am not sure there is rock to remove. Usually when the shell itself is not of value (i.e., opalized) they are split in two and the faces polished. There are generally greenish stone with the outlines of the chambers. Look at pictures on ebay.

Can I safely dig it out an possibly find the ammolite That is the Ammonite. Digging around in it will get you nothing but a broken Ammonite.

Agree with the ID. Yes, the whole thing is the fossil. If you're going to do anything with it split it down the middle (from top to bottom in your first pic) as Daniel suggested, otherwise put it on the shelf as is.

Along the main body of the ammonite there is a ridge of opalized material.

Carol, cleaning and polishing those is a delicate job. Unless you have the right tools and experience, I'd leave it as is.
