This is what your leg will look like after surgery to repair the broken plateau on your left proximal tibia. Slice open skin, muscle, tendons, hammer bone back into place and fasten with a couple screws. Close up with staples. This happened July 1991. This is DH's leg. After a few months of recovery, we went out hiking again, and he disjointed/separated his left ankle. Had to have that (temporarily) screwed together, off from work for another few months. We actually got very lucky with the entire incident, which happened about an hour's drive to the east of us. Was at the top of a talus slope (lloking for barefoot geckos, no less!), when he started to slip. His leg got buried, and he went over siedways (SNAP!) then tumbled down the hill over/between sharp rocks and boulders. Very lucky not to have hit his head. We had great insurance coverage, and by going to the wrong hospital in the first place, hooked up with the sports doctor for the Charger football team. DH does not even walk with a limp, and the scar is just a thin line now, not even noticeable.

The outcome could have been much worse, Scott. That's what you get when you go looking for Switaki.

Nope, not a one to be found. I'm thinking we might've got some bad info on location? We were looking half way down Mountain Springs Grade to the desert on the north side of I-8. Someone had told us we could find them there, I'm not so sure.
It was an interesting ride home (around midnight). DH was wearing some brand new Levis (probably helped keep him from getting cut up during the fall down the hill - there was a gash in the side of tanktop he was wearing, but it must have been hanging loose, did not get cut there), so after we got back to town, we stopped at home and he changed into shorts. We already know how they like to cut clothes off you at the hospital.
Because of swelling, they couldn't put a temporary cast on it. The only thing they could do for him there was stabilize with plaster strips, and wrap with bandage. Probably got some pain pills and a tetanus shot (just for good measure). This happened on a Saturday night. They arranged an appointment with the surgeon. We saw him Monday, and did not get surgery until Wednesday. A long time to wait when you are in so much much pain. And him, too - just kidding. But I did go through it all with him.

He could not have done it without you.
You guys are nutz. Cut the freekin' pants off! Jeez.
I hate levis. They are for skinny people.
switaki like humid nights. You can be standing on the correct rocks for months and never see one. Then a humid night, lot's of clouds but warmish, and you'll see five. At least from what I can figger out from seeing other people's images and stories. I have never seen one. Never cared to look.

Billy, this happened in July 1991. He's much better now. I don't know if I could handle it if it happened now, would probably end up in the poor house.

I did a Joe Theisman on my fibula/tibula when i was 22 hers old. In a cast for 16 months and it healed crooked enough to wear my ankle out at 50 and get it fused.
I am glad that leg is good to go.

James, as I mentioned, it was pure dumb luck that we happened on this surgeon. Being a sports doctor, he knew all the tricks, used all the latest things. The leg had to be strapped into a machine that continuously flexed and unflexed the knee, with only time out for bathroom breaks. Had to use it non-stop for a couple weeks. But I think that was the key to a complete recovery.
Wow, 16 months in a cast? That sucks, especially if it was in the summer heat and humidity in GA. Seems you've done your damndest to wear yourself out.

Staples suck. I had a couple hundred or so at least. Don't remember. Do remember having some taken out. Yay!
I like the 'hammer bone back in place' comment the best.

Rob, I agree with your feelings towards staples. The doctor had mentioned that it would be an ugly scar (he was a great surgeon, but his bedside manner sucked). He didn't even match up the sides evenly before closing. The back of the knee was black and blue and all kinds of purdy colors, so there was a lot of trauma going on - hammers will do that! I decided not to post that photo. Mario - I don't know how to respond to that, LOL!

Scott, that would be a negative on keeping the staples. However, he did keep the two screws that were temporarily installed in his ankle to hold it together while it mended.
And what, exactly, did you require 54 staples to close?

His wife did it . She drugged him and stapled his mouth shut. It was like closing a giant cavern.

Looks just like my leg. I to fractured the right medial tibial plateau and had to have it bolted back together. My doctor was the team doctor for the NY Giants and I remember often seeing LT (Lawrene Taylor) when I was in physical therapy. That was back in 1981.. Never had a problem with the knee ever since. Great doctor
