I see this all of the time, new stock, old stock. I realize that something that has sat in grandpa's basement since 500 BC is old stock, but why does anyone bother to mention this? What is the difference when it is the same stuff?

Reputable sellers will mention old stock as something which is from an old location. Often these sites are worked out, closed to collecting, or all of the best material already collected. But there are some dealers who misrepresent their material by labeling it old stock. If in doubt, a bit of googling will usually let you know how old and how available a material is.

Old stock generally = higher prices. Stuff that has been festering aging in someones backyard, etc., for years. But like Don said, it's not always true. You know, like everything being antique, vintage or rare...

There are two uses for old stock. Like Don said old collection/collected back in the day, etc. Usually not readily available anymore. The other common use is with dino bone and other restricted materials that were legal to collect in the past. New stock is generally a new find of material that was once plentiful and then thought to be mined out. Or a totally new on the market sensation of some sort.

The first thing that crosses my mind when an ebay seller says "old stock" is... "hmmm... ok, so if this is old stock the why the heck didn't it sell along with its comrades when they were all NEW stock? Must'a been an ugly duckling... :-) C-ya, Rick

rykksometimes at estate sales a seller will go buy everything. Often it is stuff collected 30-70 years ago. The rockhound collected it himself way back when, maybe even used some of it. But as many of us, he got too much and has it sitting around. He dies, the seller gives his descendants money and offer it on ebay as "old stock".
