I think I posted a piece of this a while back asking for ID. I cut off some slabs so I could make a christmas ornament for my mother in law since the rock is from the farm she grew up on. This one is from the local river, and I just really like it

Those are great! first looks like a quartzite to me but it may just be the photo. The second has a lot going on. Looks like the bottom of that will hold up better to cabbing than the top but then again, that is just from the photo. Both are really cool and your mother in law will love her gift! Fran

DonB Although it shouldn't make any diff, some of our thinking could be guided by where the rocks are from. I could easily believe that the one from the farm is an agate. We find stuff like that in New Mexico and other parts west. It may actually be a piece of petrified wood that has been totally agatized. Lets guess its hard, really smooth to the touch where there is a break or fresh saw, and somewhat transluscent if cut in thin slices. Nice looking slab at any rate. Tom

The farm is in South East Minnesota, outside of Adams. Locally, I am in Cedar Rapids, IA, and find rocks along the Cedar River.
