I have been doing some thinking about starting my own type of forum based on my knapping website. Knapping is such a broad topic and subject, and I am trying to design it as a teaching/learning platform such as the one here at RTH. My knapping partner and I play host to teaching the younger crowd at some of our gatherings and it is important to include them in it also. Being a member here at RTH (and I still treasure the experience, people and the forum as a whole and plan on staying here forever!) I hope not to take anything away from this place in any way, but would it be wrong to ask some of the knappers here about taking an interest and concider joining if I do create one? I am not asking anyone to leave here by any means, just trying to create a forum that caters specifically to flintknapping. Any suggestions as to what to do or about creating a new forum would be greatly appreciated.

It is a totally different thing you are wanting to do. A branch of this hobby ..And you are wanting to take it to a bigger platform/classroom.. .There are a few people who are on here and on different rock forums besides this one and they coexist pretty easily....I think it is a good idea...I would be willing to dabble in it.I do the hafting for what my brother knaps..I need to learn how to knap myself....Why not set up a Tutorial/Tips for here(Hint)... If you do it add a link to here and vice versa...Follow the passion I say....John

Rock is rock. I got Mark to add a carving section here so I do not see where one more would be a problem. My son is a knapper and it might get him up and going again. Jim

By all means. Why not. It is as all about rocks as anything can be.

Thanks guys for the support! I had thought about asking Mark if there was a way add the topic here on the RTH site but the subject matter is too great for only a small section. I have decided to go ahead and create my own new forum and see where it will go. Like I said, I dont want to take anyone or anything away from this forum. The subject matter and possible related topics of flintknapping are way too broad and different from some of the topics here. I am looking at the Proboards forums and like that I could create a similar format like there is here at RTH. Thanks again for the support! Dave

Dave: Have you had a look at the flintknapping board on Paleoplanet? This one seems to be the most active on flintknapping, but there are several others. Woody

I will be sure to check it out Woody. I have looked at a couple of others also. One is here on Proboards but it is more of an artifact hunters forum. It has a lot of info and I am into collecting also. One of the reasons I have been think of starting my own forum is for some of the kids my knapping partner and I demonstrate to. I would like to build a platform that will help them learn more and kind of bridge a gap between them and some more advanced and older members to make their experience greater. My partner and I have also dicussed doing a few workshops and knap-in type gatherings. Having our own forum would be a great way to get it all together. That way we could have some extra credentials to back our work. Hopefully it will all come into place.

Jim- I am from NW Ohio. My knapping partner belongs to a place called The Seven Eagles Club in Grand Rapids, Oh. It is a small historical setting that depicts early settler life. We do alot of knapping demos in an indian type setting and also have school tours during the week. Everyone stops to watch us work, but the kids are the ones who take the most interest and are really eager to join in and try it. It is very rewarding to watch their faces as they try to make their own arrowhead. We like to teach anyone really because it seems to becoming a lost art- trying to preserve it through the young ones.

We have quite a bit of obsidian slabs from using it to dress blades. I should learn to knap.
