Cathy, I am totally impressed. The awesome pictures in the stones then the frame around them, wow. Dang it, now I am going to have to get a flat lap so I can try it. I am not sure if I could come up with the creativity like you have though. Jim

Nicely done! I can't even imagine the patience & dexterity that requires. That oval one is truly amazing!

Thanks Guys! The Biggs sold, lol! A lot of work, but definitely worth it!!! I found on these intarsias that I can command whatever price I want and they are so different that people don't question what I ask at all. Definitely worth learning to do and Gary is a great teacher!!!! Basically we went all the way back to learning how to cab for me to be able to work these and it made all of the difference in the world!!! It's definitely taken my work to the next level!!! -Cathy

I like the thinner frame. And the last has a great subject rock. the broken ends are realistic looking(as if wood)

Those are such beautiful pieces of work!! Is it basically cutting 4 strips of stone, gluing them on and shaping? I know that is way over simplified.

I am completely digging all of the skillz used to make these. Stone & color choices, flat lapping all of the correct surfaces for excellent joinery, careful glue-up,and then the "cabbing" skillz necessary to accomplish these little framed masterpieces.
My opinion? Whatever price you chose? Too little. Bump is 20% and see. Keep bumping every few sales until sales stall. Retire on rocks!

Thanks Everyone! Barclay, kind of. I think the most difficult part is getting the glue surfaces flat and square to each other, especially on the oval and also finding the stones that complement each other to the best degree. Had a lot of help with these as they are mostly stone from folks here on the board. Shotgunner, I'm going to see how these go but may have to take your advice, lol! Pat and Krystee, Gary is a great teacher/mentor/friend and we've been working long distance across the country mostly via the internet. Actually, Tony and Roy helped me out on the rocks across country too and I could never have done the shows or these pieces without all of their help!!! Definitely a challenging way to work, but worth trying and doing! These were first try pieces... the very first was a disaster, but I think these came out very well and I'm very happy with them!!!! I'm going to be working more up over the next few months and, as I get the how too perfected, taking them to the next level for me. I see stones as works of art in themselves...kind of mini masterpieces. I don't know why, I just always have and, for me, this just feels like the best way of bringing out what I see in them... for now. In the end, I think what we do here with rocks is all about growing and taking things to the next level... stretching, and for me, this is a big stretch and a good one!

A couple things I learned about doing the mating surfaces is: Don't move them back and forth on the lap disc while grinding. When you move them you slightly round the flat surface. It's a hard habit to break when you've been taught to move your work around to evenly wear your diamond discs. Get a decent set of machinist squares (NOT Harbor Freight!!) to check flatness and squareness. Hold the piece against the flat edge and look for light coming through to check. I will also be getting an angle finder for the more jigsaw like intarsias. Thanks Kathy for the post. We will be doing several holiday bazaars this year and I would like to see how intarsia sells here. Got to pay for the tools Lee

Holy crap, Cathy. It seems like only a few days ago you were bragging on the Lortone combo unit and just starting in the hobby. You make me want to stay home and play with rocks.
