For a friend's birthday last weekend. Don (jakesrocks) sent me some abalone last year and I've been looking for a project to give me an excuse to cab some. Well a good friend had a birthday last weekend so I took the opportunity to cab some. I didn't know what to expect but our friend was very happy with the finished result.

One of nature's prettiest materials. Great workmanship

Very nice, I would imagine that it's a challenge to cab being so delicate, no?

A light touch was required, yes. It wasn't what I expected though, I'd never cabbed it before but I messed up a few test ones. I though there was the iridescent colors layered down from within the shell (looking at the inside) but it turned out that the pretty color was only a hair's breadth deep.
What I ended up doing was grinding off the white coarse outer side, until a clear layer was exposed, and then very gently removed any opaque material until the clear layer was left over the highly reflective underside of the iridescent side of the shell.
If these are flipped over the typical shiny abalone color is on the other side, but it isn't smooth

Besides the beautiful shells, abalone are probably the most delicious thing to eat on planet earth!!!!!
