On Sunday I went up in a private plane with my buddy Andre. Our pilot is a salty old dog, Rick. What a great guy he was. Been flying since he could walk I am sure. Dashboard At first it was all clouds More readouts Heading east from Upland, CA The haze is starting to clear The prop! The radio stuff rockncajun - this is I-15 north is to the left. Ray this is where we headed north to go to Wrightwood. Left/lower is good old Route 66, where many got their kicks. This is the western edge of the "San Bernardino Mountains", here we are looking northeast towards - Crestline, Lake Gregory, Lake Arrowhead and way farther out is Big Bear Mountain. An other view of I-15 looking north again. The turn west to Wrightwood (Actinolite) is way up top. We are at 5200 feet above sea level. Approximately 3000 feet over takeoff. This is Highway 30 that goes to crestline. To the right of dead center on the cliff next to the highway is the appropriately named "Cliffhanger Restaurant". They are closed more than open due to weather. Soon the road became higher than us and that is the pilots milestone for "halfway through the ride" and we turned around. We flew over (looking down) a large pair of red tailed hawks. I could not capture them. Scenery. Zillion Dollar homes with a view Count the swimming pools Final approach Runway 24 - Cable Airport - prepared to land. Rick landed in a 10-12 mph crosswind. The plane swinging to and fro like a pendulum, then at the very last second, he levelled it off and sat it down like a well trained huntin' dog. Nice as can be. The applause was deafening non-existent. Rick was simply awesome. Fat ole man - 35# lighter since April More at my flickr setWe got back in time to have a buffalo burger at the Buffalo Inn and then off to the afternoon soccer match. The girls won 3-nil!

ur welcome Jim. It was fun, but no trip is complete without a report of some sort.
Wifey bought a "pre-lesson" for me at xmas last year. I forgot about it. She brought it to my attention so I put it to good use with the good weather.

Cool report, Scott! Thanks for taking the time to do that. While I like seeing the photos, I think I'd take to flying in a small plane about as well as I would to skydiving - NOT! Too bad the air wasn't a little less hazy. (I know, that probably was a clear day, lol!) We've have some exceptionally clear days in the past week here in San Diego area. They are perfect for photographers. (Think I'll keep my feet on the ground, and my head in the sky!)

It was hazy. Just like you see in the images. We have had 50 mile visibility days. We saw catalina island recently from the mountains. Easily 50 miles.

Looks like fun to me. I guess Catalina is a great reference. I heard from jet ski people it is a fine ride and 50-60 miles? I was surprised you had haze as dry as it is there. Was that humidity or something else causing the haze? You are almost as silver fox as i am. Thanks for taking time to do photos. Were you light on your feet when you got out of the plane?

Great report Scott. It reminds me of a pleasant day a couple of years ago. My wife just can't pass up a silent auction and one of her wins was an air trip for two around the L.A. basin. Our pilot flew to Camarillo airport from Van Nuys to pick us up and said he'd treat us to a nice lunch. We wondered a bit about that but decided to be surprised. We took off with great views of Ventura County and Lakes Casitas, Piru and Castaic and broad sweeps of other areas as we headed inland.
After 20 or 30 minutes of sightseeing our pilot nosed down to a little airport in Antelope Valley. We landed at Rosamond Sky Park where people have airplane hangers instead of car garages. It's a complete suburban community for airplane enthusiasts and it was great fun when we taxied to a light plane parking lot adjacent to a really great Mexican restaurant. We parked the plane just as you'd park a car, walked just a few yards to the restaurant and enjoyed a very nice meal.
Afterward we took a little "taxi-tour" around the upscale community, then back into the air for the return trip. I've done a lot of flying as a passenger in smaller aircraft and was relieved to see our pilot on the radio to the tower taking note of traffic as we crossed the north-south air corridor for planes landing at Bob Hope and Van Nuys airports. It was all great fun, especially learning how some people living inland from L.A. get around the punishing freeway commute.
