I'd say start out with cheap blades. You aint gonna hurt the rocks.

The only rocks to wait on would be if they need to be oriented for cutting. Like palm root that looks great with the "eyes" showing but just streaks if cut 90 degrees off. Some thunder eggs take practice too to get best effect. Most important thing to remember is to securely clamp the rock before cutting. Clamp rock and use both hands to see if you can move it. Also with clutch released roll rock to blade and see if blade hits square or deflects. Move the cross feed until you have a square cut even if you have slabs a little too thick or thin. Or grind a surface flat to start.

Yep, either grind flat or make blocking cuts. John is absolutely right about making sure your rocks are secure. I had one slip last night that jammed the blade. Fortunately it's just a little dished.
Be sure to candle your Montanas for best orientation.
Congrats!

Everytime I seen Clyde cut,he stressed that the clamps to be very secure!! The Montanas,I knew to candle them. The thundereggs are what I'm puzzled about. Some guys know by looking at them and cut them the right way,but I will learn! I know there will be trial and error with this too, just has everything else in life. Plus some great people on here to teach me the do's and don't's... So I'm not worried a bit, just excited! I haven't had so much fun since the pigs ate my brother- LMAO.....

I can't help with Oregon eggs but have cut a lot of CA geodes. They generally have outer ridges. Cutting on the largest ridge generally gives best result. I'm sure you will find some similar method to orient your eggs.

Yep, what John said about the eggs, look for the spots where the agate shows from the outside and cut right through the middle of it to get the largest window. Also cut yourself a few wood wedges. When cutting round and odd shaped rocks you can stuff a wedge in to get a better grip on the rock.

An old timer gave me a great tip on holding geodes. Make three sided rectangular frames out of scrap pine or other soft wood. Clamp in the vise with geode protruding from the open end. Cut through rock and wood. I watched him use one on his saw before I tried it myself. It really works.
