Not home built, but I received a couple of projects to see me through the winter. First is a vintage 8" Rocks Lapidary arbor. It's missing the hood and pan which I'm searching ebay for, but the bearings are free and quiet. Before I disassemble it, I'm gonna soda blast it down to bare metal. Next is the Poly arbor. Narrow Poly hood on one end, Wide Rock's hood on the other, with SC wheels that need dressing, but have a lot of life left in them. The bearings are free and quiet, so won't need to replace them.

Hey Mike, I have 1/2 sheet of 1/8" aluminum in my shed. I'll lay out and cut everything and take it to a local sheet metal shop for bending and welding.
I'd rather find original parts to restore, but you do what you gotta do.

Now this is what a Poly arbor is supposed to look like. This arrived this afternoon. I scored another vintage machine yesterday. An old Beacon Star arbor with hood and pan. It shipped today. I'll post pics when it gets here.

Wild idea . . . What about building a hood and shield out of three bread pans?

Old bicycle wheel cover is better and probably cheaper too! I've also used PVC el's.

Wild idea . . . What about building a hood and shield out of three bread pans? Dave, I'm an old retired sheet metal man with half a sheet of 1/8" aluminum in my shed. I'll lay out and cut everything, and take it to the local sheet metal shop for bending and welding.

With your background, that will turn out well!

WOO HOO !! The Beacon Star machine arrived today, and it's a beauty. Not gonna take much to restore it. Even the whole original water manifold is there and in good shape. I just have to dismantle the machine, soda blast the aluminum pan, frame and hood and spray it with green hammertone paint to make it look original. Wish I could find a NOS Beacon Star decal for it, but chances of finding one are slim to none. I'll post pics of the machine as it sits tomorrow.

You do any metal spinning? I have, but it's been about 40 years since I did any. Used to spin aluminum in a wood lathe.

OK. I needed a pan made, but not bad enough to make you go back.... Fat chance I would ever go back. I'm enjoying retirement too much. I still do a little sheet metal work for myself but don't have any of the large equipment needed.

No problem Phil. UPS just arrived with 2 brand new motors for the arbors I'm restoring. Now I just need a dry, low humidity day to soda blast the machines. Sure wish I had a climate controlled paint booth with filters and extractor fans.

Here's the Beacon Star 6" Economy Grinder that came a couple days ago. I hope to convert it to hold 5 - 1/2" wide convex diamond wheels. I'm also hoping that a heat gun will allow me to take the original glued on ID plate off without damaging it, so it can be put back on after soda blasting and painting the machine.

WOO HOO !! Just ordered 150 nylon spacer washers. 1/8" thick X 3/4" id X 1-1/8" od. These are going to be great for getting the spacing I want between wheels. I may order another 150, just to have them on hand for other projects.
