It looks like layered agate to me but I don't remember seeing any with layers that dark. Jim

How hard is it? It reminds me of a banded calcite onyx I've seen somewhere before. It's very attractive.

I have no idea how hard it is other than it cut at about the same speed as an agate. Also, it is neither opaque nor translucent. I only got four slabs from it and sure wish the rough had been bigger.
