I've recently bought a thumler ar2 off ebay which I'm happy with but little did I know not only has it cost a fortune to ship to theU.K. . from the USA but then I get a letter from customs wanting £33 charges before they'll release it for delivery then finally when I do get it it's a 2 pin plug and runs at 110 volts well here in the uk it's 240 volts so now I'm having to buy a step down transformer as much as I love my new tumbler it's costing me a bloody fortune and I haven't even tumbled any rocks yet I just feel that the ebay seller should have made me aware of all this

Bummers, Sorry for your bad experience. Everything else about this hobby/avocation is better, I can assure you. We need to get you in touch with some of our UK members for counseling. Hi, my name is Fiona and I am a rockaholic. Welcome and hang tight, things will improve once you see those beautiful stones emerge from your efforts. Tom

Sorry to hear that and understand why you are not a happy bunny. The seller should know and tell you up front so the customers do not get smacked by surprise. I hope that now you have it you will roll out some beauties. If you have any questions just ask away because there are a lot of people (with more smarts than me) on here that like to help and we all like to see someone have a successful go of it. Good luck. I am sorry but how would a seller know what power your service is--You should have been aware of that. Can't you get a plug adapter to make it work there? You should also know that your customs charge high fees for items mailed there. I would think that most USA sellers would not be aware of each countries customs rules. I would think that you as a buyer would know more than the seller would for mailings into the UK.

Well, I ain't sorry. I did nothing wrong. But I am saddened to learn you had to jump thru all these hoops and spent so much, to learn you need to spend more... twice. No matter, in the long haul you will have many hours of enjoyment.

I share your pain when it comes to international postage rates and additional taxes and duties that get applied by customs. Even with a "free trade agreement" between Canada and the USA, Canada Customs adds on charges on when many items cross the border. Sounds like the UK is no different there.
Wait until you start buying polish by the pound. It looks just like a kilo of cocaine through an x-ray machine, so everything gets opened by Customs. It gives me a little satisfaction to picture the disappointment on their faces when they realize they have confiscated a bag of aluminium oxide.
Once you get over the shock of the start-up costs and you tumble your first load, the satisfaction will overcome the frustration. Then, like most of us, you simply need to manage you addiction, I mean your Rock Tumbling Hobby.
Darryl.

Oh thank you I'm glad it's not just me then the buying of the item is actually not too bad it's all the extra charges that pee me off .but never mind can't be helped it's just one of them things xx im so so eager to get tumbling I've got my rocks in the barrel ready to roll but I can't use it until the transformer gets here I've managed to get a 50 kg bag of AO in various grades and a polish for £40 which I thought was quite good ..so now I'm sat here twiddling my thumbs waiting on the transformer and it's killing me ... I want to tumble NOW

Greetings [fiona19021972], firstly may i welcome you to RTH Forums from this side of the pond! I have never noticed anyone outside the USA or countries that share the same voltage of 110v/220v/60hz that have a Tru-Square (Thumlers Tumblers) rotary or vibratory. I hope you did not pay too much for the AR2 as it retails at $114.95 at (Rock Shed). As a importer it is up to you to know that you may be charged 20% VAT for trade goods from £15 up to £269 & gifts valued over £45, goods valued between £270 & £630 are charged 2.5% Import duty plus 20% VAT on top, It is not just the goods value itself, but goods plus postage. Customs treat all goods as new & subject to VAT unless the sender specifies key words like "Used" or "Under warranty replacement" before the goods, a "Used rock tumbler" may be in its orginal box, but would not be wrapped in cellaphane, similarly "Under warranty replacement rock tumbler" should not have a sales invoice, but an under warranty cover note. Also some Ebay sellers inflate the customs value to the price they bought the goods instead of the price they sold the goods for. Parcel Farce send you a ransome demand for vat plus their £8 or £13.50 fee, if you don't have a courier like UPS, otherwise your courier will send you a ransome demand instead. Greetings [fiona19021972], I am surprised that you went for an American tumbler, rather than a British tumbler such as a Beach or Evans, both can be found in Sticky #1 below.
