I went to a local festival last weekend and they had a section of the town set up as an old colonial encampment. I ran across a guy that was doing some knapping and we sat and talked about the tricks of the trade. After about an hour, he tossed me a couple of his spalls and asked me to sit and show him my skills. I was kinda nervous at first, especially using his tools, but he talked me through a couple of tough spots and I managed to produce a couple of the best points I think I have ever done. And he let me keep them also. I had a great time meeting a new knapping friend. As it turns out, he learned his skills from the same man that taught my current knapping partner. What a small world. Here are the points below. Cool red Flint Ridge with a lightning bolt down the middle, about 3 1/2"... Bone colored Flint Ridge about 2" in length...

Great job, that first one is in a class all of its own.

Those are pretty sweet! Some day I may try a hand at knapping. My property is littered with flint. Everyone pretty much considers it a nuisance around here.

Nice Work! Knapping is an art best done away from hands and feet. A BIG canvas tarp to catch the chips can save a lot of blood letting! Do you use Kevlar gloves?

Thanks guys!
1dave - I have a small spot on the back of my lot that I have a tarp and chair set up justnfor knapping. I only use gloves when I am spalling out big chunks, especially obsidian. That stuff really tears me up and I can only work it for about a week and then have to heal up. When I do my points, I like to feel the flakes as they come off and sometimes direct the flake with finger placement to make it go a certain way. Flints and agates are much easier on the hands, and I do most of my work in these.

Thanks Jolly and Brian! I am getting ready to mount the red one in a hand carved wooden eagle handle this weekend. I will post some pics if it turns out good.
