Mario-even the pipe stuck down in the coupling will leak if you do not glue the pipe all the way like 3 inches into the coupling. I stuck one together and gained some length by only sticking the pipe 1.5 inches into the coupling and the joint leaked. And leaked. And leaked. The reversing action of rotation is a powerful force. It only took 6-9 months to wear thru the SDR 35 thin wall green pipe. I would guess 5 years for sch 40. And probably 10 years w/sleeve. I may tumble bricks, chunks of steel and nonferruos metals, glass chunks big as tennis balls and worst is removing the skin off my small whole corals. So i use them for obnoxious stuff. Glad you see what i experienced. I could definitely deal with making a new barrel every 5 yrs, but then I don't tumble as much as I did when I started, so I would probably get closer to 8-10 yrs out of one of those barrels. p.s. You sent me a sfrb of coral a while back... I am cabbing some of it now, I know... finally!!, and should have some pics within a weeks time... slow going because of my illness and the lack of equipment I have but then again... I do enjoy the challenge!!! Laters Bro!! Mario

Sounds good Mario. glad to hear ya cab bing. I thought you were over the illness. Be sure to post the cabs. It's been very slow going with the illness's that have plagued me for the last 2 months total time, and to be honest I am still getting rid of the dregs of the last one (chest congestion), but I am happy to be able to get out to the shed from time to time now and am slowly working to catch up on the slabbing work that has piled up!!

We under estimate the importance of health till we lose a bit of it. Money, and many other pleasures change priority in a hurry. Please get well Mario.

Rough grind is fast
220,600 and polish slow
6 inch barrel 40 rpm fast 8 inch barrel 30 rpm fast 6 inch barrel 24 rpm slow 8 inch barrel 18 rpm slow
But can run the coral 60-80 rpm in 6 inch barrel

Yes. Jasper beat down to Texas was 100% safe at those speeds. Those lavic jaspers are very similar to pebbles from Texas i broke to chips and tumbled at those speeds i never seen any of them frost-ever.
Some of that lavic will break up. Good. It wasn't worth tumbling anyway. If i was running that lavic i would run a load for a day or two without grit and let the tumbler grind the ash and soft pieces off it

I hope you polish that lavic!
I wanna see what you get!
You might be surprised how solid all that Lavic stuff is. Remember, it's washed down from ancient mountains to get to where I found it.
The Cady's have geodes sitting ON TOP of the mountains/hills. They have lost a LOT of height since those stones were formed. My theory on lavic is the are where lavic is was smaller hills and they are now gone but the jaspers remain. The thing that says to me not alluvial from south Cady's is they are not rounded from washing far down stream.

That that you sent is beautiful . But no where near as crushed and ground like the Rio Grande gravels. Not an issue. The lavic has great texture/strength/density etc. I will run some. I will chip at it to get some of the good glassy stuff and let the coral go at it in the rotaries. I can tell by chipping a few they are for real.

Made out of 6 inch schedule 40 PVC. The are about 18 inches long and hold 15 pounds. I have two that i run hard silicified coral in at fast (60RPM) speeds and slow(20RPM) speeds for finish/polish. now for almost 3 years. 24 hours a day. My store bought barrels did not last long at these speeds. I have recently had to patch them. And am building this new barrel w/simple preventative measures. The main components are 2-6" sch 40 couplings------2 x 7.65=15.30 2-6" x 4" sch 40 bushings--2 x 15.11=30.22 Section of 6" sch 40 PVC pipe as long as you want your barrel 4" section of sch 40 PVC pipe for access hole 4" Fernco rubber cap to cover access hole---6.00 4" to 2" sch 40 PVC bushing to plug closed side of barrel---6.89 Big can of PVC cement 16 oz---7.00 So rough cost not including pipe is less than $75. Not cheap but totally rough and tumble barrel. The easy reliable access hole is way user friendly. The bushings on the ends provide thick plastic ends where barrels wear out typically. The open end w/Fernco rubber cap for easy access: The closed end has a bushing due to the bushing's rugged thickness. If you use the simple and obvious end cap route it will wear thin in the center: I still have to plug the 2 inch hole in the 4" x 2" reducer bushing on the closed end. I want that closure flat so another barrel can run against it without damage: jamesp a couple years/miles on those, any new thoughts or updates? I came across a large, heavy piece of PVC (6" or 8" I can't recall now) about 4' long and this project came to mind.

herchenx Like the 6 inch pvc very much. Like the easy open cap. Like the longevity. Worse thing, they are loud. Your new farm may have a spot for it.

jamesp, is the easy open cap the gasket with the hose clamp, or is there another cap you are using?

jamesp, is the easy open cap the gasket with the hose clamp, or is there another cap you are using? Look up 4 inch Fernco cap. It is a rubber cap that yes, is held on with a hose clamp. Every Lowe's or Home Depot carries them.
