The Rio Puerco crosses the I-40 in several places. Where were you able to collect? We always stop for fuel/rest at the Route 66 Casino by the historic Rio Puerco bridge. Never thought about looking for rocks. Looks as colorful as the AZ wood.

Actually, it's on the north side of I-40 from the casino, near an old AF radar station. I suspect the area near Belen would yield the better quality rough, but there was so much at the northern site and we stayed at the American RV Park nine miles from there, that we decided to just spend three days there. Most of the petrified wood I found was not nearly as colorful as the one on the pictures. Denny

Is it pretty solid or fracture prone like the AZ wood?

Is it pretty solid or fracture prone like the AZ wood? This one, and one other fairly plain one, are both solid. Not at all like the AZ rainbow wood.

John, Sheltie got lucky if he has a piece that big with minimal fractures. Yes there are some really colorful pieces of Rio Puerco wood with minimal or healed fractures, but fractures are common and frustrating when you start cabbing a larger piece. Rio Puerco petrified wood is like Television. Theres a lot of it but only a small fraction is worth messing with and of any real value. I work with it a great deal and am always looking for that piece that says it all. Come dig around and see if you find it. Tom BTW My recent order from JSGems arrived promptly and the service exceeded my expectations. Thanks for the quality attention and recalculation of shipping costs. Tom

How's the pup doing, eating you out of house and home by now? Actually, the one piece of pet wood from Rio Puerco that I posted on the forum really is pretty nice - and solid - apparently unusual for that particular area.

Thanks Denny. Actually she is pretty good about keeping the food budget reasonable. Of course at the rate she destroys toys I'm not saving much money...lol. Leave it to you to find an unusual piece ;-)
