Wondering what the difference is between the models of Covington saws. There seems to be a substantial weight difference but their web site doesn't say what the real dif. is? Seems to be on the larger slab saws.

Got complete numbers? According to there recent catalog all the Heavy Duty Slab Saws are HDS models. I couldn't find any saws with HS model numbers.

Sorry, I don't know how I missed it. The HS saws are the export (220 volt/50 Hz) models for all of Europe, Australia and many other countries. The motors are a lot more expensive. Not sure why weights would be that much more. I know some European countries require interlocks and maybe more crating is required for overseas shipping.

Then HDS it is. I don't have one nor is one on the horizon but have my feelers out. Thanks johnsjsgems.

I have an 18 inch covington and am very impressed with it. It might be about the lightest one though.
It sure cuts good. That's all i care about...

In my somewhat biased opinion Barranca makes the best slab saws. They redesigned quite a while ago to incorporate the HP style drive (they call it "highland precision"). More recently they started plating all cast iron parts so end users that have to use water soluble coolants don't have rust issues. They also chromed the slide rods for better sliding and either have or will soon incorporate carriage bearings for even smoother feeding. The fact that they make changesto improve their products rather than use the "we have always done it this way" response means a lot to me. The head of BD has a garage full of lapidary equipment and is always in the middle of product development/improvements. Nothing like having a lapidarist design equipment that really works. Their saws are extremely heavy duty (read that as extremely heavy) so shipping can be a deal breaker.
