I've been too busy lately to check the message board but am glad to see so many new members and the fine improvements to the site. Any other people living in SoCal, so we might split a bulk order of grit? I live in Los Angeles, near LAX but go down to San Diego 2 or 3 times a month to rockhunt. I'm in a rockhounding group that is help work a tourmaline mine near Banner. No real tourmaline yet but 100's of pounds of amazing purple lepidolite - hard enough to tumble or to make into spheres. Plan to start my first batchtumbling this weekend and will try to remember to take before and after pictures. Also, anyone found a good bulk grit supplier or have any ideas of what type of industry in SoCal that might sell/use lots of grit?

I am going to have some fun with this one. So your name is Mudd huh? My wife and I will be moving to So. Kal starting next week, if the house closes as expected. We will also be near LAX, in Burbank. I am going to miss GIA this semester and I am going to want to find a jewelery school, and lapidary club. It will be great to know at least some one there. If 1973 is your beginning year, you are younger than me, by a long shot. If you could do some scouting I would appreciate it. I am shutting down the silicone brained anti-thistical anti-christ for a while as we are packing. My e-mail is going to be saturated and will be dumped every day. I will miss all you guys untill I am back up. We are giving up a growing business of significant capitol to go caretake my wife's aging mother of 94. We built up once, we can do it again. Some things are more important. People can live without our jewelery, her mother is entitled to close her eyes forever knowing we care. Keep me in mind. Doc

Hi Doc, Looking forward to meeting you. Mudd1973 represents graduating from Harvey Mudd College in 1973. If you are settled in by June 26 & 27, come to the Culver City Rock and Mineral Club show - Tourmaline, Nature's Rainbow. If interested, I'll give you directions later. I'm chairing the Children's corner and will be there both days. There are several great clubs out here. The Culver City Club tends toward the lapidary end of rocks and minerals. And, SoCal is heaven for rock hounding. One group I'm in has trips somewhere every weekend. Lately, we've been going mostly to tourmaline mines in San Diego County. Email when you are out here. I am also looking forward to meeting a fellow lapidariast. My wife and I are excited at the prospect of knowing someone there, especially one who sees the heart of the stone. We are going to be a little lost at first and it would be nice to meet, talk, have some coffee, and learn new things. I looked at your stat sheet after I wrote the last thread and you are the same age as my wife. Floriduh has been very rough on us. The daily hatred, the midnight bonfires with sword waving, the stares, the total rejection of what I do. We will need a friend and a little down time. We thank you. I will stay in touch.

Hi Mudd, welcome to the board!
Don, I know everybody will miss you while you are in this transition period and not posting. I hope everything goes as smooth as the surface of your stones so that you can be back with us ASAP.
I think it's wonderful that you and your wife are uprooting your lives to move across the country to care for her mother. So many people these days just put their parents in a nursing home and forget about them. I know that your wife's mom will be much happier in her golden years knowing that her children love her enough to be there and I know you will never regret it.
Will look forward to when you will be back with us.

Dear Doc, your knowledge, patience, skill and willingness to share was one of the reasons I found this board so welcoming and decided to hang around a bit. The best of luck to you and your wife in your new life. As someone raised in a multigenerational household I know the importance of caring for the elderly and for keeping those closest to us...well...closest to us. Live long and prosper and I hope to see you back here at some point.

Good luck on the move Doc. If your driving, drive carful and don't forget to give us a honk when you go through Texas. We'll all probably have a whole list of questions for you to help us on when you get all set up on the left coast.
