A while back my Paw-In Law after seeing my happiness with rocks

decided he wanted to learn to do something with them too...What did he decide ...Faceting...easiest thing ever to learn...Right....LOL ...Well since he is retired,he devoted a lot of time reading and getting a basic understanding of the craft...He bought a machine a year ago...had a heart operation not tooo long after..But he has done extreamly well....He and Mom -In -Law went to the school in Georgia and both took the faceting class for the week...

The first two stones are what he did...I found the settings at Rio Grande...and here is the results

Green fiber optic quartz

The next one is my favorite that he has done...I gave him an Apache tear and he hooked it up...

This one was done by a fellow up in Spruce Pine...We went up there and did a sluice bucket...The only hounding my wife likes..LOL
WE had them cut an Amethyst she had found and do the setting...Anniversary present...

Wow John, he did a great job. I really like the amethyst and the apache tear.. Faceting is how I found this forum in the first place- I was looking through links to get more info to start learning and ended up tumbling and cutting instead. Now I am on to knapping. I have a friend that is a self taught faceter with home made equipment that he inherited from his dad. It really is an interesting process - someday I would like to learn it.

Back in the day, The Lapidary Journal ran a series on reproducing famous diamonds. I collected them all and purchased proper colored blobs of glass.

No longer know where any of that stuff is, but I did build a flat lap.
Next up is to make some jamb peg dop sticks out of long 1/4" hex bolts.

I'm into taking the simple way out these days.
