My local rock club asked me to see if I could find a mineral specimen display that we can show at our yearly rock show that shows different specimens from around the area, they would like a display for local specimens and possibly a display for worldwide specimens. It needs to be something that people can pick up and look at, (could put the individual specimen inside of a display box to keep it from being damaged if it is fragile).
They didn't know what to allocate for a budget so I am putting out some feelers. I know very little about mineral specimens but with the wealth of knowledge here I figured someone here could help put one together for me. If anyone has the knowledge and ability to help me out with this it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks everyone!
Tony

You need to decide what size your club wants to collect for display. The choices are Micromount (MM = under 2 cm), Thumbnail (TN = 2-3 cm), Miniature (Mini = 3-7 cm), Small Cabinet (SCab = 7-12 cm), and Large Cabinet (anything over 12 cm at its largest dimension). You can find inexpensive acrylic boxes for Micromount, Thumbnail and Miniature specimens, which makes them easier to pick up and examine without losing or damaging. The Cabinet Sizes are usually mounted on stands and not for picking up, as you really don't want those damaged. Some minerals are extremely delicate, but others like quartz and jade can stand a bit of handling. Aside from the potential damage from handling, some beautiful minerals are poisonous enough that you wouldn't want people handling them.
The prices for individual minerals vary wildly, depending on rarity and demand. There are thousands of minerals that your club could collect, so it would be good to narrow it down by size. You could also narrow down the scope by other criteria (geographic area, gem minerals, minerals with industrial uses, etc.). Just some things to ponder while deciding.

Shermlock, Scott..... A member here bought a estate that has a bunch of specimens, you might contact him to see if he still has them all.
