Neat Jim! Boy, we have chert exactly like the ones with the blue spots here on the ranch. It weathers from limestone and looks almost like some kind of psuedomorph after coral or sponges but I really don't now what it is.....Mel

And now they work! I think photobucket was acting up earlier. Pretty interesting stuff.

I pick up rocks like those you show on pix 6,7,8,9. It looks like chalcedony lumps in a matrix. They are always a greyish blue. Sometimes so densely packed with chalcedony lumps that it looks like pudding stone. The surface would indicate dissimilar hardness between the chalcedony and matrix but I haven't tumbled any, I just pick it up and put it in the queue. This is some chalcedony that I have tumbled that has the similar color as the lumps in those rocks:

That is a likeness in the orbs all right. The matrix is way different though because none of mine have any translucence. Here are some mini slabs that I cut a long time ago of pretty much the same stuff. The matrix is almost always purple/lavender/grey but the orbs are always white/blue and not translucent. There is a lot of this rock all over the mountain but about 99 percent of it is fractured real bad. It must have been either the first rocks to the surface to start weathering or was fractured in the heating cooling process. I have made one cab with it and it has a fracture in it. The biggest slab in these photos is not over two inches in diameter.

The matrix is, like Mel's, chert or something really similar. Real hard but easy to knap off a chip. Jim

Here is a picture of another one I had sitting around: Now I'm going to have to put one in the 'ol round and round and see how it comes out.
