I always see rock clubs, workshops or outings mentioned by those who live in America however England doesn't have many rock clubs. There are a fair few people who go out and actively collect fossils but not so for minerals, certainly not enough to merit a lot of groups. I know America is obviously a lot bigger but still, I wonder why?
Are the specimens better quality, easier to come by and more accessible over there vs UK?
In all honesty until recently I don't think England was a very "hands on" place hobby wise for the majority, not in comparison to the US anyway. We have had a resurgence of all things crafty and diy, it's cool now where as before it wasn't the norm for most.

I believe there was more rockhounding in the past. Many of the mining operations closed down in the last century, and the mines are now flooded and/or padlocked, cutting off one source of materials. There is vastly more public land in North America on which to collect, however, particularly in the west, so there is more opportunity to go out and collect. Britain has a lot of coastline where I presume collecting would be allowed. As in N. America, Britain still has some famous, privately held gem rock locales, such as the Blue John fluorite mine, that periodically allow collectors.

I got a great a friend in England & trying to interest her in starting the rock hobby keep telling her to go to rock fairs but I get the feelings there isn't much of that over there but she as lots of rock'n hearts from me mostly
I would think that with Scotland's agates there would be big interest

Billyd is a member here from Scotland and he just sent me some cool slices of some of his local agates. They have some cool stuff over there. I will try to get some pics tomorrow.
