Easier to call Johnson Bros and buy it! milto Might be easier, but it is also considerably more expensive than making it. Most solutions only contain 40% or less of sodium silicate and considering how heavy the solution is shipping is quite expensive. If you go through a lot of it, like I do, then it makes more sense to make it. And it is dirt cheap to make.

I go to the local foundry supply. $1/lb for 40%, not worth my time to make it.
That is a horrible 'How To' tho. They fail to tell you that trying to do this in a glass container may destroy the container and everything below it when the container fails. I promise a hot caustic silicate solution is a very dangerous beast, burn you right thru to the bone. You cannot wash off with water, adding water is exothermic, making it hotter!
Also, you probably don't need silica gel packs, glass should work just fine.
Starting to break down the gem variscite cubes tomorrow night.
