I must defer to The Senior Partner, The Creator. Though I am sure our use of these has given Him many moments of mirth.

I found this description very helpful to understand what the heck is going on in a specimen such as this one found by grayfingers. "After multiple flows of silica water and extensive buildup of chalecdony in the cavities there was more movement and shifting of some of the agte bearing beds and several secondary flows filled the centers of nodules, geodes, limb casts, with a layering of chalcedony and common opal in some cases, and an alternating mixture of opal and chalcedony in other instances. Temperature of the silica water that flowed into the cavities must have been a determining factor in whether a layer was structured as common opal or as chalcedony. How progressive layering of opal to chalcedony could happen in an area the size of a fraction of an inch is somewhat of a mystery. Time involved is also unknown." From Harmon's MT agate book " The River Runs North" page 10.
