Accidents can produce real beauty once you look past failure. Just needed repeating.

So... I used a propane torch that wouldn't stay lit. It's new out of the box. I was unable to get butane for the mini-torch. Maybe a vape store will have some. The pendant did fine. The ear dangles were not. One survived while the other melted somewhat. Overall, it was a good learning experience. I'll treat myself to more clay if I see a sale.

I'm feeling more confident. I got a ring mold that adjusts for shrinkage, plus a ceramic plug to keep the inside diameter my size. I'll do a test ring before adding the ruby. I've been sticking with wire wrapped rings and a few sets of earrings. A friend gives me good feedback. She has a shop downtown. She is evaluating a ring made with brass. If it wears well she might buy some of my pieces outright. She doesn't do commission work. She would pay me 50%. She thinks the rings will go for $15-20 each. I'll be happy with $7.50-10 per on my end. I can easily make five rings an hour. I buy the wire by the pound. The stones, etc. are bought at a discount. Few rings cost mor than 50 cents to make. I enjoy the process so labor isn't an issue. I like the idea of a ceramic plug to prevent size shrinkage!

I made the first attempt too thin and didn't let it dry long enough. It broke. That clay became a pendant. Learning can be expensive. Ideally I should have used a 50 gram pack, but the 25 gram came with the kit. A 50 gram PVM3 will run about $100. I also had trouble keeping the propane torch lit. The heating was uneven and too varied in temperature. I need to locate butane for the more appropriate torch. It's harder to find these days.

If you can find a smoke shop, tobacco shop or pipe shop they usually carry butane in town. I got a three pack of really clean triple filtered butane on amazon. When it got here, I looked at the return address- it came from a shop right down the street from my house!

I'll check there. I don't smoke, so it's not a place I'd think of. Thanks.

I would like to make very small sculptures or jewelry in copper or bronze paste. I don't have an oven but I would like to be able to cook them with a torch. Several videos on the internet show that it is possible but we never see a solidity test and there is an assembly each time (the video is never continuous). According to the majority of people who have tried, it is not possible because of oxidation to have a resistant part.
No matter how many forums I have browsed, I have not seen any mention of trials with the use of "borax" style fluxes. To my knowledge, all soldering requires protection against oxidation (tin solder, copper solder, etc.) of the solder flux type. This one could make an airtight barrier against oxygen. To be applied below, above and on the sides. Could you tell me if you have already tried and if so, what result do you get?
THANKS.
Good for you.
