I have been thinking about alll these huge tumbler barrels you guys have. How do you clean them out between grits and the end?

My big barrel is a back breaker when it's full. I could really use an engine hoist to lift it. Otherwise it's the same process I use for any barrel. I just dump it onto a set of stacked screens on a bucket: quarter inch hardware cloth in a frame above window screen in a frame. The screens make washing and culling a lot easier.
I only use my rotaries for rough grind. Sanding and polishing is done in a vibe.

You're welcome, Scott! I like to catch the fines that fall through the hardware cloth to use as filler in either the grind or vibe. Cheaper than ceramics! LOL @ James

I just crack the bottom of my barrel while it is still tumbling and let it drain all over the motor and floor.

not good for the motor. well, John asked for appalachian engineering. you get what you ask for.
letting the barrel drain like that is as good as app engineering can get

John was probably not laughing the day it ground up all his rocks. i had a 2 month old load ground so nice. 65 pounds. gas pushed the cap off partially and allowed the fluid to drain and beat the stew out of the rocks. They 'were' beauties. I walked out of the house and heard them way over just rattling away and knew i was in trouble. Better if the cap comes off and dumps the rocks. But a full load running dry leaves fractures that are very hard to tumble off.

John was probably not laughing the day it ground up all his rocks. Of course not, but today his self deprecating sense of humor really tickled my fancy.

Been there, done that too many times . John, ( herchenx)* I love that you still have a sense of humor. I guess it has been long enough in the grieving process huh. Anyway, like Scott I actually did laugh out loud. Thanks, I needed that today! * when you do this username link, do they actually get a notice in their profile? My big barrels run 100# full, one for roughing. I handtruck the barrel out back, crack it, and let it drain into a deep hole to get most of the snot and some weight out of it. Then I bring it back and set it on a 5' countertop high table under the edge of our patio cover. The table has a freebee ss sink in it, and we run water from an outside faucet, or off the utility room sink in cold weather, warm water that way. The sink drain goes thru a couple buckets for settling purposes, then into a big gravel filled hole off the patio a ways. I put the hole under the perimeter drain, if it gets full of water the drain takes it away.

Yup, I've had a mess or two myself. Had a little gas buildup.

It amazes me how much grit can get on the pillar blocks. My motor finally got bad bearings though.
