Well, I had only joined our local rock club (TN Valley Rock and Mineral Club) back in August and somehow was elected in the November meeting to president for 2014. While I am not very proficient in rocks and minerals, am willing to learn and have energy, so I guess that was the only pre-requisite at this point!

90% of the work is done by 10% of the people. You are clearly part off the 10%!
Good on you.

yep, I did the same thing, or sort of:) Joined the local club, which I now know to be a really good one for the city our size. anyway they wanted me to run for pres after only being there for 2 or 3 months. I declined because I really don't know squat. they kind of insisted so I said ok, then another member said she would do it and we had a vote and I lost . So now I am vice pres (chair). Not to burst your bubble john:), its because we are young. This hobby is slowly dieing too many video games I guess:( So they need younger people to take over the clubs. The long time members are smart, they love the hobby and want to keep it going. They have been in "charge" for so long ts time to get younger blood into the hobby. Not easy to do but we can do it:) BTW I am 55 years old as I type this!! That's kind of scary really, at 55 this is a new hobby for me, some of our members have been doing this for 50 years, ya we have some late 70's people in the club. but I can see a trend happening, not just in this but in most hobbies. Technology is great, its wonderful, but if all the young people just play on the computer or TV or games all hobbies will die. Wow I sure strayed, congrats on the club, get young members, well any members and have a super good time. Tomorrow I am doing a cabbing session at our club, I know nothing LOL. Take care all and have fun Tom

Tom - I agree with what you are saying...I am 46 and there is probably only 2 members younger than me. Most are 60+ and have been in the club forever and probably held office a few times. So I certainly understand the new blood/energy aspect.
Got some of the old timers that still hold office understanding the "need" for new recruiting of younger members to keep this going. We have some folks in their 80's+ that are so knowledgeable, if we don't "mine" the information they have soon, it may be lost forever.
I started a FB page for them, just to get our name out their and we probably need a small website. I had been interested for 2 years in joining this club and what little info on the web that existed for them, was outdated. Had some pushback about a FB page as one member had identity theft and is paranoid about social media, but we are keeping no names on it, just pics and information. I was lucky in June to drive my their annual public sale on a Saturday and stopped by to get the information. So there really needs to be a big kick to try to find new members.
We are still mailing about 1/4 of the newsletters as some members aren't PC literate. Looking forward to the challenges of adding some aspects to keep things interesting and try to gain 1 new member per month during my tenure. I think we have about 60 members, but lucky to get 25 to a meeting...closer to 20.

Looking forward to the challenges of adding some aspects to keep things interesting and try to gain 1 new member per month during my tenure. I think we have about 60 members, but lucky to get 25 to a meeting...closer to 20. I once took over "speaker chairman" for a reptile club. I took the task of getting awesome speakers at EVERY meeting. I doubled attendance in 4 months. Doubled MEMBERSHIP in 9 months and at 11 months meetings were triple from when I started. So for the christmas meeting I asked for $250 to buy airfare for a truly world class speaker (he asked no fee) and the club denied me. They voted me out in January saying I was "taking the club in the 'wrong' direction". I doubled membership and tripled meeting attendance and I was taking the club the wrong direction!!??!! Speakers are where it's at. Get awesome lectures and get the word out online, twitter, facebook, email groups, do it all. A small club like yours you can do better than I did. When I started we had 60 at the meetings. When I left the last meeting was 190. They did $325 in raffle ticket sales! Yeah, I am a bit bitter. I was just chairman. Kaldorlon, you got it made as president!

Luckily the 1st VP is in charge of speakers..lol. Yes, but you are his boss. He needs guidance. I promise as a relative newbie, what you are most excited about will be good for everyone. If you want to learn more about Tennessee agates, then get that Tennessee agate dude to speak. I could go on, you get the idea.

The 1st and 2nd vice president are some of our most knowledgeable folks, but will see what I can do to make things more interesting.
