Well ol' man winter finally arrived - snow, ice and burrrrrr. Spent last night candling my way thru my meager supply of MT agates collected this year, getting ready for the winter cut and grind. ((Fortunately the beer cans were camera shy.))

Andy, looks like you have some nice sized nodules there! Say, is that a Buffalo robe I see? Bill, Shotgunner nailed it most are about the size of potatoes... Quite a few are going require some real specific cutting angels to get good patterns out of them. I only picked up about a 5gal bucket of them this year, but fortunately not too many clears. Yes, that is a buff robe - I shot it a few years back during a real interesting fishing trip to the B.Horn. The best meat ever. Makes for a super comfy chair. Mohs, by candling I meant - dark room, wet rock, bright light....look into the agate and try to figure how to cut it to get most out of the color banding and dendrites (if there are any). For me part of the fun of MT Agates, trying to figure out what is in them then seeing if you we're right.

Ha..the buffalo story, ok. Well a few years back I was in Fort Smith on the Crow Res for a company "retreat" fishing for fall browns. The gal we had cooking for us mentioned her husbands family raised buffalo. After expressing my interest in shooting one (primarily for the meat, not a true "hunt"), she called up her husband and he came on over. Well after he and I finished off a jar that night, we had a plan for a dawn patrol hunt. I shot a 3 year old bull on the rim of the Big Horn Reservoir, beautiful country. It was more challenging than I had anticipated, but still not a "hunt" as I would described one. With the help of a tractor to hoist the bull, we dressed it out and skinned it. An old native named Popeye came over and was happier than can be when I gave him the stomach - he planned on making menudo. We fed 3 families with the meat I brought home and it was unbelievably delicious. When I picked up my partners who had been fishing that day on the Big Horn I had the head and hide in my drift boat, it turned quite a few heads. One old boy commented - "now thats what I call a bullhead!" (which is also a type of fish).
Anyway - there's the story and that chair is fairly dangerous to have in my office as it inspires nap-time.
I think I will find my way back to that country soon, now that I am "into" rocks. Lots of unbelievable hounding in that part of the world.
Cheers
