That rock needed to be scrutinized Chuck. Well done.

I am thinking roots growing into cavities then being replaced by ? ? Is it as hard as the rest of the rock? Jim

I would guess it is quartz since thats abundant in this location and it must be close to all same hardness since it tumbled evenly.

No reason you couldn't have petrified stuff inside the quartz. Quite a find. Several years ago a picture of a wheat seed inside a piece of quartz was shown in R&G magazine.

I had posted this rock earlier in the tumbling section but I wanted to post it here to see if any of our rock geniuses could shed some light on how this was formed and if there are truly sticks trapped in the quartz or if its something else. This is a rock we collected earlier this spring from flint ridge Ohio. Stick coming to the surface near top left Thanks for looking Chuck I would suspect an aragonite tube growing in a water filled void before agate filled up the space.

I think that stone has worms. If you are worried I can send you the treatment.

Well, now worms are all I can see. Great rock though!

If it is wood, that's the coolest piece of petrified wood I've even seen.

Very unique! Sure does look wood-like, though I have never seen wood encased in agate like that.

Those "sticks" appear to have a square cross section. I'll have to disagree with the others and guess Chaistolite or some other square cross section mineral which has dissolved out and been replaced with impure quartz solution.

These are truly mini-rocks. Diamond rough and chips. Some of them fluoresce nicely. Photo taken without macro lens.
