Howdy folks,
You guys been watching that gold rush program on Friday nights? Some of the crews mine in South America but the others are in Alaska and I was really drooling the other night when the one Alaskan crew was having problems with their screens clogging up with beautiful garnets. Guy held up a handful and they were beautiful red translucent stones. Man, I would have liked some of those for my tumbler! Wonder how much good rock they overlook while lusting after their gold?......Mel

Me and my boys watch that show. I was thinking the same thing when the sluice was clogging with all those garnets. we are always talking about all the rocks going into the tailing piles wondering what they do with all that and what kind of rocks they are. I thought we heard them say they dig through some quartz materials.
The whole South America adventure sure looks like a flop. Hoffman's really should have stuck it out in the Klondike. Its fun watching Parker getting gold from the equipment that Todd said was junk and blamed for his problems.

My family loves Gold Rush too. I thought I was the only one trying to see what was going into the tailings pile. Those garnets sure got my attention too. They said that they used to use them in their shotguns when they ran out of lead, so they must be pretty plentiful. Should we email Parker and ask him to save some for us next summer?

Yep, those Hoffman's seem to always be a bit of a joke. Hard to see how they'd make much profit when they buy and break so much equipment and spend so much time screwing up. Parker has the best work ethic I've ever seen in a young man these days. I'd swear I've seen some nice jasper and even what looked like jade slicks on some of those tailings.
Hunted some huge piles up by Chalis? sp., Idaho one time and there were some interesting materials on those piles...Mel

Hoffmans are from Sandy,OR?,about two hours from here. They own the airport up there and own a few planes too...Not to many people like the young guy... Seems he loves giving orders and not sweating from work!

Hunted some huge piles up by Chalis? sp., Idaho one time and there were some interesting materials on those piles...Mel Challis, spelled by a native Idahoan. That's one of my favorite spots in this world and I cut my gem-collecting teeth in that region. I was intrigued by the garnets caught in the gold screens too, but most looked like almandines which are usually too dark to cut real gems. But I saw a few lighter-colored stones and that really piqued my interest. I'd love to know what other gemmy minerals they're finding. Pyrope garnets colored by chromium are good indicators of possible diamond pipes and they can appear almost as dark as almandines. If they're finding chrome diopside too it could be very interesting from the diamond standpoint. They find diamonds in Siberia. They find diamonds in Canada. How can they NOT find diamonds in Alaska? Nearly all the diamonds recovered to date in California have resulted from gold-mining in alluvial deposits. When it comes to chances of diamond recovery I think the Hoffmans are much better situated since that region has a proven history of diamond production. Speaking as someone with considerable experience related to TV production, anyone who believes these "reality" series aren't 90% scripted should bid on that bridge for sale in Brooklyn. Rick

Definitely an entertaining show. Last night I watched all the shows that I taped from the start of the season in one big marathon. Those garnets caught my eye. Anybody watch Bering Sea Gold?

I have been in the Yukon gold fields, and there is not only garnet, but jade, mostly plain agate, jasper,and........fossil ivory by the bucket full. Most of the miners up there allow tailing picking. Woody

My favorite show. I'll bet the Hoffman's still have a successful season because they are subsidized by the Discovery Channel pretty heavily and they are the main group in the series. They won't be allowed to fail too much. I don't have the same high opinion of Parker as many of you do. His work ethic is wonderful but he needs to learn some humility.

We have watched 'Gold Rush' since the first season. We also drool over the thought of getting to pick rocks at those mining sites. All that nice clean rock coming off the back end of the sluice to select from. I would like to hunt the Dakota Boys site where they dug out the ancient waterfall. I think Todd Hoffman is a disgusting piece of work in every possible way.
Parker Schnabel's mentor, Tony Beets is the guy that lives up to the legend.
Love Bering Sea Gold too. What a cast of characters.

We are all fans to Parker Schnabel too. I hope his grandfather is OK. I remember seeing boulders of what looked like jade in the buckets at the big nugget mine. Red ones too, maybe jasper?
It seems the Hoffman crew has found a way to make a mint mining for gold and NOT finding it! Now THAT is a first!

I sent my husband up above Nome for about 6 weeks a few summers ago to dredge for gold (his birthday present). He brought back a bucket of sand and garnets for my daughter, but most were pretty small. Maybe it's time to have a cutter look through them and see if there is any additional value in there.

I don't know how good your shotgun is, @shotgunner, so don't have enough information to decide if that one works for you. A couple more weeks until your birthday, so you need to hear it a few more times yet - HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SCOTTGUNNER!!
