A friend of mine sprayed bleach on the limestone foundation in the root cellar to kill some mold. Now there is a fine, hairlike formation growing on the limestone. When you touch it, it turns to dust.
Anyone know what it is?
No pics.

If it is limestone the crystals may well be calcite

Another good possibility is Aragonite crystals. They form in limestone caves as sprays of fine needles.

I will take a slightly different approach.
Sodium hypochlorite solution (bleach) is slightly acid and is a strong oxidizer. I am going to go out on a limb here and suggest that the crystals could also be calcium chloride. Calcium chloride will not last long as a crystal though. It soaks up water better than any sponge. So strongly it attracts water from the air it will turn to a syrup in a day or three.
So, if the crystals last a long time, I am wrong.

I was thinking Aragonite also. I could not find any pics on the net, so I figured that I would ask you all. I think I was right.
