Dave at Rocks 'N' Chips says he only opens barrels to check the rocks after a week or so and not to "burp" them. I have read that only glass has this problem on the web as well. Ironically, when I tried burping my barrels, I screwed one back on too tight and ended up with the mess I tried to avoid!

Jasper and other iron-bearing gems are said to be the ones to watch out for; whether this is fact or rocklore I do not know. I open my tumblers as seldom as possible; generally the sound they make -sort of smashing and cracking instead of a gentle rumbling- tells me when they need topping up. Opening them once a week to put in more grit or move 'em to the next stage is all you really need to do, though it's a good idea to keep an eye on them throughout the week to ensure that everything's running smoothly.
