Winter is back and this time likely to stay....so I plan to make the most of it and put this concretion thru the freeze/thaw routine and try to get it to pop. Its from eastern MT - any guesses as to what maybe in it? ? Or is it a dud? I will post again when the core is revealed. Cheers

I looked at the white and blue weather coming to Georgia. Wish you guys would keep it over there. Looked like a humongo blizzard. Gotta go split some fire wood.

Does the concretion show any visible parting lines ? Being from Montana, the freeze / thaw cycle may not phase it.

How a hillbilly cowboy cracks rose quartz up........ Freeze in freezer real good, throw in salty boiling water. Works pretty good.

Cheers Works well IF you have fractures that can fill with water that will freeze and wedge it apart. No fractures, no joy. I spent "years" doing this to get the cores out of thundereggs. I ended up with 4 nice cores. 3 fell apart on their own. NOTE: The above image is from Mindat. I'm experimenting to see if it will stay.

The freeze / thaw thing works on some fossils. Need to take a dental pic after thawing and pop the loose matrix off, and then refreeze. It takes several cycles to get most of the matrix off.

Dave n Don r right. If there r no cracks then no progress. Also it takes several freeze thaw cycles n betwern the boiling water.

Thanks all for the input. I will run it thru a few cycles, and then redirect if now progress. Cheers.
