I am not just moving, I am going mobile (north - south) on the cheap but I have to have internet to keep me sane. What do I have to have as far as unlimited phone service and ? blue tooth ? whatever the hell that is to connect my computer. Keep in mind that I am still using a flip phone but figure that is out the window. Jeeze I hope I do not have to change my phone number too.
Any help will be HUNONGOUSLY appreciated. Jim

Hi Jim,
If I understand your question, you want to cut your land line and rely on your mobile phone for phone and internet service, is that right? If so, you'll want an unlimited data plan and you'll want the ability to "tether" your phone to your computer through a USB cable.
Bluetooth is mainly used to use a wireless headset with your mobile phone, so that's not really relevant to the rest.
As far as number porting, you may be able to port your land line phone number to your phone. You would have to check with your mobile provider. If you're just upgrading mobile phones and want to keep the same number, that shouldn't be a problem.
I'd be happy to help more if I have a better idea of your questions.
Chuck

Sometimes I have a hard time turning what is in my head to words on the page. I blame old age.
What I want is internet access wherever I go excluding hounding places where there is no phone service. The "tether" thing you mentioned is what I probably want. I am cutting cable (where I get a land line) and will be disconnected from everything. I am not too crazy about having to sign up for 3 or more years with a contract but if it is the only way.......
Thanks for your help Chuck Jim

I just did the same thing with Verizon, so I can get internet service down in Q and also to be able to take credit cards without feeling like I have been violated. I tethered my laptop to my phone with the bluetooth and can use my phone as a hotspot, but it is still cheaper for me to keep my cable at home than to go with an unlimited data plan as I will only be gone for about 2 months out of the year. I had to sign up for 2 years and buy a new smart phone (which I consider to be dumber than my old non smart phone) but I am starting to get it figured out.
My uncle went completely wireless and has a hotspot he keeps with him all the time as he does lots of RV'ing he really likes it and uses it at home also but I have not talked to him about price for the whole package.

Well I got a Verizon hotspot used it for a couple months during the summer when I built my new computer haven't used it since rely on my dial up
but the hot spot is nice -but pricey $60.00 for a month or x amount of downloadable time
you'll use up that sixty dollars quick if you watch lots of u-tube

Tony brings up a good point: I forgot about bluetooth tethering. That will work provided your computer supports bluetooth.
Any Android phone should support tethering. You could probably get a no-contract plan, but you would pay more for the phone.

I checked my computer and it is bluetooth capable. What does it take to do the tethering? Net10 is $50 a month with no contract and a phone for $100 so all I would need is a way to connect with my computer. $50 a month does not bother me because I am paying $40 a month now for the whole house. Jim

www.republicwireless.com - tether android phone to laptop with USB cable, $250 phone (MotoX is awesome!), no contract, unlimited 3G internet, unlimited cellular calls, unlimited text - $25 a month. Backbone provided by Sprint. Really excellent service along highways. Just like Quartzite is off of I-10. I had awesome service in the North Cady's.

If all you need is a hot-spot for the internet, check with Radio Shack. They carry one that is pretty cheap. I can't remember what cell service it is for but it uses verizon network

With Republic the phone would be paid back in ten months compared with Net10. If I referred Scott we would each get a free month so it would be even in nine months. After that I would be paying $300 a year more with Net10. Is keeping my same number worth three hundred bucks a year? Probably not but jeeze I would have to change my number in a lot of places not to mention spending six months to a year trying to remember the number. Ya ya, I know Karen, I can get the number out of the phone. You are not getting three zingers in one day at my expense.
Coming out of the hole it is going to be tough coming up with 250 unless I can wring it out of my son's neck now that he is working. I will get back to you Scott.
Just remembered that the Net10 phone is only a hundred bucks. Maybe Net10 for a year then switch to Republic. Jim

I have Metro PCS. A few yrs ago I visited family in VA & my phone had no service there. I got a TracPhone to use while I was there. I still have it somewhere. You're welcome to it if you want - just need to add minutes

Ahum, did some more research (always read the fine print right). Net10 is unlimited except for the limited ? high speed data to 2.5 gig every 30 days then the speed goes down to ? ? ? ?
Time to do some research on Republic now. I do not know what it takes to use up 2.5 gig of data. I watch a few news videos and some that come up here. Sheesh Jim

That is required by federal law.

Whichever wireless plan you go with can tell you how to tether your phone (depends on the phone, sometimes you have to download an application both on the computer and the phone). Republic's limit is 5gb/mo (twice Net10). BUT, you might need to check whether you can tether a phone with Republic. According to what I can find, they don't allow it. You would have to do your web stuff on the phone. Maybe Scott @shotgunner has newer info? Here is info. on transferring your number to Republic: community.republicwireless.com/docs/DOC-1332Chuck
