Was lucky to get a rather big piece of Christophers Agate and after taking off the colored top, it revealed continued structures underneath. The fringe of which has an interesting design that lends itself to either a face with strange/punk-like hair or a head of some sorts. After starting with the idea of either a horse or a birds head, I settled for attempting something I rather fear; a dragon head. Have always shied away (even more more than human faces) thus far. So make it or break it, I gotta try sometime? Right? No better time than right now. Here is the top I got out of that piece and cut to size on the right to start the new project. OK, little progress to be had this week. Preformed head and torso. Now I got to sand it down for the rest of the week and hopefully get some details into it by coming weekend. Got into trouble several times by hitting dirt and empty spaces. On top of that, there seems to be a fracture running right across the snout. So will be on my toes all the way up to the finish-line, if I want to keep it in one piece. The biggest problem still remains: Finding a balance between color/fire and definition of subject at hand. Till here for now, Kurt

Wow, you do like a challenge. Based on what is to be seen on your new website, I'll wager it will be stunning.

Thank you everyone, Life has officially become busy from now up until 28th of the month. School-Christmas-Play (can't put it off any longer ), some promos for summer-programs next year in China (just came back clowning around 4 schools in China yesterday, as Santa promoting courses), regular school plus have 7 days as shopping-mall Santa awaiting the holidays. Still, got downtime on transport between dates, so I'm still able to sand and file. The face will turn out anything but smooth. The chin area and base of the nose has lots of murky areas with sagenite pins that have to be dug out individually, so the face will have some color but it will be quite rugged. The snout has full Schiller color, yet the nose has nothing. The lower chin has bubbles in most places. The chest are is the most desperate. Got some color on top just next to the beard and lots of color rings going all the way to the bottom of the piece, but.... there is virtually no angle in those rings (they seem to go straight into the piece, so I have not found anything better than a week shimmer. slowly I'm running out of material there. could dig all the way in as I'm nearly sure that there are bubbles underneath it all, but would risk that the whole composition suffers in due course (the chest is quite small already as is ) I set the eye a little to the right and think its in the right place now for a presentation from the angle seen in the picture to the right. We all got our own ideas about Dragons; and hence: the only thing that we can do in the end is to follow our own instincts and hope that others see it the same way. I have not shown yet good pictures with the full effect of the Fire Agate for a reason. Only Christopher (as I hope he is going to be as excited about potential in this piece as I am), has seen how the fire really plays out in this piece): In the end, people might see anything from a dragon, a griffin, fiery horse or even a type of bird in it. I shall be fine with all of the above, as long as it wakes the imagination of the viewer (hence no working title for a change). Till here for now, with best regards, Kurt

Christmas Santa season has officially kicked off. While we got decorations up in Hong Kong since about a month, it was rather refreshing to see a whole city for a day without a single indication about anything Christmas. So,..... had to do something about that........ Two days ago in China with my boss, at a school trying to get the kids singing along. And group-pic with all the students in attendance. Ended up with being given nearly 50 letters of Christmas-wishes. Mind you; not one contains an actual wish for anything personal. Two letters are 3+ pages long (in English) wishing for peace, prosperity, filled stomachs , etc..., and giving very detailed reasons and opinions for them. Just hope that some of those students will be allowed/able to attend next years summer-program. That should be an interesting ten days with minds like that.

Great story Kurt and as usual you are figuring out a way to get the job done.
The Chinese children are still quite selfless (especially the girls)(boys are spoiled) but even at the college level the only thing they want for themselves is a good education so they can do something worthwhile in their lives and help their families. Jim

The difference between the boys and girls behavior is getting better these days in the city. I'm told that in the countryside, that's a bit different though. The boys are not for nothing called little emperors. But yes, the girls are usually much more family oriented.

Time for an update. After a week of sanding, trying to get closer to the color, I was ready to sit down this weekend at the machine and give it a final shape. So much for plans: It has been raining 48 hours straight and the fordome seems to have given up. So files have become my best friends this weekend. Shape is pretty much done, outline will have to wait for next Sunday as there will be no time to sit down until then. Best regards, Kurt

Got two early Christmas-gift for myself today. Bought a new machine and a couple of hand-pieces, so should get moving again this weekend. And school-drama is over and done. Was absolute chaos as I/we experimented and tried something the school had not seen before. Yet it looks like our boss liked it, and during Christmas staff lunch announced that he wants to see more of that type in the future; henceforth, basically securing my contract for the 2014/15 school-year. Happy days, life is goooood; now off to play Santa for a few days......
