While I'm searching for a slab saw, I have the opportunity to cut some rocks at a club members garage once a month. So this past Saturday I cut some 10 or so thundereggs I collected months back from the Lucky Strike mine in Oregon . The saw I used was a 10" tile saw of unknown make, using a Kobalt 10" porcelain blade. The eggs are a little bigger than a baseball. These are the first LS eggs I've cut and I'm amazed at the diversity of the interiors. Here are photos of a few of them. Thanks for looking. The first one I opened. I like the red-orange border around some of these. I imagine this one as an island in a lake or ocean. Sorry for the glare on the right side. Looks like being in a cave looking out to a body of water beyond. A mess of stuff in this one, but I like it. And finally Thanks for looking.

Nice! Lucky Strike egg with moss are, to me, among the most beautiful of eggs to be found....Mel

Nice eggs, especially since you collected them yourself.

I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of moss in the first cut. The five in the photos were the best of the dozen I cut. Four others were so-so or didn't have much in them. Three others had chunks fall off of them or fell apart completely while cutting. I guess that's a pretty good ratio of good to not so good. I have ten more to cut. But it will be about a month before I can. If there are any good ones, I'll post more photos. I like the look of the polished faces on half eggs. Something about the roughness of the exterior contrasting with the beauty of the interior. But when I cut these, one of the so-so ones had about 1/3 missing. So I ended up with a half and a slab. The slab is about 1/4" thick. And when held up to a light it is translucent. So I think in the future I will cut the eggs in half, and then use a slab grabber to cut a couple slabs from one of the halves. More for me to give to friends and I'll still have a nice polished half. Now I just need to master the Richardson Ranch sander/buffer.

Now I just need to master the Richardson Ranch sander/buffer. Do they still make that overhead sander/buffer they were selling in the '60s?

Now I just need to master the Richardson Ranch sander/buffer. Do they still make that overhead sander/buffer they were selling in the '60s? Since I'm fairly new to rock hounding I didn't know that equipment had been around that long. Really? On one of my trips to the ranch, when I brought the eggs I'd found back to the store, there wasn't a soul around except for Casey (I think he's the son of the owner who died a couple years ago). He took me and my rock hounding buddy on a tour of his shops. It was very impressive. He also gave us a demonstration of the equipment by sanding and polishing an egg for my buddy's wife. It looked easy enough to do. So on the next trip I bought it. I've just started using it and I've only got maybe 10 hours on it. But I think I'm close to having it figured out. I hope so 'cause the cut eggs waiting for a polish are stacking up.
