When I go rockhounding on the river, sometimes I find idiots that think they know hounding!!!!! They bust open rocks to see whats inside and throw the rock away, that's make me kind of angry!! Most of the time, they ruin the rock! The other day,I found a rock that was shattered from a moron and left to lay! I picked it up,found the other pieces and took it home....In cleaning it up, I discovered a nice quartz interior....The moron that broke the rock didn't even examine the find!!! Well its my treasure now-LOL...Thumbs up

I often break rocks in the field, it helps me make sure that the stuff I haul home will be worth cutting and polishing.

I always look for nature's chips first and other hints as to what might be inside. Why chance introducing fractures in what may (for now) be a masterpiece?
Wouldn't a tiny battery operated "window polisher" be handy in the field?

Wouldn't a tiny battery operated "window polisher" be handy in the field? How about a battery operated toothbrush, and even some toothpaste (cream, not gel of course)? I've gotten to the point where I can quickly recognize bad stone and reasonably good stone. I'm not bashful about bringing something home and throwing it in the landscape if it doesn't look good when cut. Chuck

I was thinking of something a little courser that would get down to the level where spit would help.
