Hello...I am using a Poly arbor that used to have an expanding drum on the left side and a composite wheel on the right side. Took the composite wheel off and bought a brand new expanding drum 8x3" from Kinglsey North..brand new bushings installed that came with the wheel, wheel installed so it turns in the correct direction. I am getting a huge amount of vibration from the wheel, almost to the point where it is hard to use it...it almost feels like the wheel is not balanced right. I have tried to see if it stops spinning in the same position all the time (to see if it is heavier in one spot) but is does not seem to favor one point of the wheel...any thoughts?

Welcome to the forun jeffursilloForgive me if I ask too basic of questions. Are belts on the wheels? Never run them W/O belts Is arbor speed 1725 RPM or less? Motor S/B 1725 Rpm with the pulley on the motor the same size or smaller than the pulley on the arbor. Did you run it before you put on the new drum, did it vibrate at all then? Is the old drum still on it? Have you checket the arbor shafts to make sure they aren't bent? Is the arbor firmly attached to your bench? Are the plastic arbor adapter inserts tight? Some of the inserts supplied with chinese wheels are loose fitting or they can be cut to the wrong length and slip to the side, allowing the wheel to get out of line. Rayspan Expandos are chinese made and IMO vastly inferior to the USA made Scott/Murray drums sold by Lortone. I work in the rubber and plastics industry and have a working relationship with Lortone's supplier so I may be a bit opinionated on the topic first try removing the drum, make sure the insert goes all the way through the drum and fits snug. If it looks OK reinstall it and try it again. You can also loosen the bolt, turn the drum 1/4 turn and check again a couple times and maybe find a sweet spot where it works well. Don't be afraid to ask Kingsley to replace if all else fails. Lee #2

Lee..not basic questions, just things I didn't mention in the original post....The arbor in question ran fine with normal vibration (almost none) when the composite wheel was on it...all I did to the arbor was take the comp wheel off as well as it's bearings, and replace it with the news drum and it's bearings. The bearings are tight to the shaft and fit the whole wheel hub. Belts are on the drum..(I know about not running them nekked!!)shafts are not bent, based on the assumption that the arbor ran fine before the new wheel was installed...speed is 1725....arbor is bolted firmly to the base it has been on for ages....This arbor is one of 6 in my club's lapidary shop..so it is well cared for by myself and the other shop stewards....I will play a bit more tomorrow night and if I can't get it running right, I will call KN for a replacement...
Thanks for the suggestions...
Jeff
