I've been cutting rock like a mad-man for the last week trying to clear out too many milk-crates full of small/medium cutters out of my garage in anticipation of Quartzite in January. Taking a whack off the end on our new Covington 10" push-thru saw (given to Eva and I for a wedding present in September :-) ) and if it looks really good I slab it, if not it goes in the garden or the sell-it bucket. So I got through Lavic, through the N.Cadys seam agate, through the Field Road agate, through the Nevada chrysocolla (mostly junk), and today started working on a small amount of Lahontanite we collected in Nevada. We followed a 1967 rockhound's map to a place that isn't mentioned in any of the books which is the same location we found @shotgunner 's hunk of Sunset Rhyolite. This little piece didn't look like much and almost got tossed in the garden junk pile - after cutting it, holy crap it's beautiful haha. I've got Lahontanite that shows the classic pastel color patterns but this was the first brecciated piece. Cabs to follow I'm sure... Pardon the saw marks - I tweaked my blade about halfway through the day. Got it straightened and cutting again but its leaving some nasty marks behind.

If that is what you almost tossed, I would gladly sift through your 'garden junk pile' to see what you may have already tossed on a less stellar day. Nice find.
Darryl.

Tommy the pattern is all broken up. You'd better get rid of it. lol
that is sweet. Do you think maybe that is what the sunset rhyolite is? Seems similar??

I don't think so - all of the lahontanite we found has characteristic sudden and distinct color change typically at a healed fracture and has a presence of whitesh green material. It's also very hard like a porcelain jasper. The colors of the SSR blend together and it feels and finishes like well-silicified rhyolite to a medium high shine. We also found the SSR about a half a mile from the LH location.

That's beatiful, I love Lahontonite. I have some slabs (more green/pink), but haven't cabbed it yet. Does it stay together at the seams?

I tweaked mine last summer and it still cuts but leaves really bad marks. No cracks in the blade just a wobble. Nice slab too!

Hi John, mine got crunched in one spot when a rock I was holding up above the deck got bound up and slammed down against deck. I took a pair of heavy pliers and squished the area as flat as I could get it but it’s cutting bad now – making a lot of noise and leaving cut marks. It was a nice blade that came new with the Covington saw last summer so I hate to lose it but I’m going to replace it as soon as I can afford it.

I'm with you I'm trying to make mine last but the saw marks are really bad. I've read other threads about straightening Blades I was going to try laying mine flat on plywood putting a two by four on top of it and beating the snot out of it but I haven't wanted to get my hands that dirty yet

I thought I would resurrect an 8 year old thread to point out how much this stuff looks like the flint ridge material from Ohio. Same colors. Same patterns. Did you end up cabbing this stuff, Tommy?

Honestly I don't remember Jonathan. The area where I was collecting this and other interesting material got 'discovered' and quite literally invaded by claimer profiteers and there is something like 6 claims in the area now. Dead Camel jasper, Red Falcoln, Dead Ringer, Mescalero, etc. I think the original Lahontanite claim from the 60's got restarted too.

Pretty rocks, whatever you did with them.
