Hey there - I'm a newbie trying to polish some Irish marble I brought back to the states. I was looking for a homemade solution for the final stage to give the rocks shine and someone suggested borax. I added a couple of tablespoons of borax, then covered the rocks with water (using a vibrator). I checked them after a couple of hours but they only seem to be shiny when wet. What else gives them that high shine? Did I miss a step? Many thanks!

Chances are you missed a couple of steps. First if you covered the rocks with water in a vibratory tumbler, you had so much water that your rocks got no chance to move against each other to the extent that they needed. Secondly, borax may be good for removing a film from your rocks, but its not normally considered a stand alone polish. I'd guess that you need to show your rocks to an experienced tumbler to determine if you need to start at 200 grit and work up through a couple of other stages before you go to polish or if you are lucky enough to have really smooth stuff and can go straight to a polish mode. Best polish for marble should be recommended by someone more experienced than me, but someone will jump in. How much water in your vibe, I'd say wet the rocks, and pour off all the water you can, and then add a tablespoon or two for starters. Too much water is a no no and leaves your polish/grit in the bottom as your rocks roll around above. Good luck and by all means seek help whenever you need confidence. Tom
