I occasionally buy some rocks and other stuff on ebay and have used Auction Sentry snipe tool for years, but the updates and support have recently went South big time. I'm looking for a new snipe tool and wondered what you guys and gals use and are happy with. It doesn't need to be free as those are usually quite limited

A quick mouse clicking finger in the last 4 - 5 seconds of bidding.
I put in the highest bid that I'm willing to bid on an item, and watch the ebay countdown. When it reaches 5 seconds I click and enter my bid. It works only if someone else hasn't already entered a higher bid.

That works if the auction is ending during waking hours or if you are near the computer A snipe tool will result in auctions won and at a lesser price than by entering your max bid amount through ebay.

As an aside, I really am against Sniping tools, probably because I lost some good stuff to them, FOL (FrownOutLoud)and they seem against the spirit of an auction/bidding process. There are a few sites that now have soft closes, in that they will randomly close within 3 minutes of some certain time. I think this is a pretty good system, especially for the seller as it helps insure full bidding. Just my 2cents worth.

I am old school...... When I find what I want I place a bid right there at what I think its worth and or what I am willing to pay and move on with life and see if I get it. I leave the sniping etc to the computer geeks that are sitting in their basement eating saltine crackers with mayonaise! LOL I have so much fun stuff to go do with the horses and all my lapidary that my time is valuable. So need it or want it go ahead and be done with it. LOL Works very well for me.

I think it would be good for ebay to adopt the live auction practice of keeping the auction running as long as the bids keep coming at a predetermined rate. Maybe not the best for the buyers, but ebay is overdue on a policy change that doesn't crap on the seller.

I unfortunately do most of my rock/slab hounding on Ebay. I can never understand the logic in some bidders who get into a bidding frenzy 5 days before the auction ends. I never put in a proxy bid days before an auction ends. I generally just put in a bid to just get into the game and tis way when I come back to the item the time remaining clock is working in real time. Than as it has been stated by others I put in my final bid in the last 4 seconds. I am sure that I have left many a broken heart in my wake with this one shot one kill tactic. LOL Stu

I agree with Stu I cant understand why people start a bidding war days before the end date . I will give a bid so that Ebay will send me a reminder about the item closing then wait.

I use bidnip, and if you get referred by a friend you get free snipes and if you refer friends you get free snipes. If you buy snipes they cost a quarter. I bought $10 worth a couple years ago and still have a few left.
If you need a referrel for some free snipes let me know and we both will get some free.

Don's got the right method
But mostly I dont really have time to watch items on Ebay so Orrums method (set it and forget it) is what I generally use.
I have rarely gotten into any type of bidding wars with either method name your price and see what happens
Perhaps if I cared about winning and losing I would snipe

Sniping was good sport on dial-up, rather dull on broadband.

Lee #2 If someone makes a bid in the last 15 minutes, the auction is extended by 15 minutes, forever, until nobody bids for a 15 minute interval. I believe someone else patented the extension of an auction upon bid. I watch for stuff on an auction called public surplus. It makes no sense for ebay to do otherwise, unless it is patented.

I use auction sniper occasionally; places bids automatically in the last X seconds of the auction listing. you only pay for the snipe if you win the auction.

I use JustSnipe. I think it's $5 per month for unlimited snipes. The only time it failed was when they had a power outage during a storm. I usually put in a bid if there isn't one yet, sort of like marking my territory, heh, then put my top-max-price into justsnipe and hope for the best. That way is just as fair as the other way -- the seller doesn't get cheated, and the person who is willing to pay the most gets it for a fair price, rather than for an inflated price after everybody gets all hormonal in a bidding war. The only problem I see for the seller is that he only gets one increment over what the second highest bidder wants to pay, rather than the entire amount that the winning bidder was willing to pay (same as a regular auction). One time I actually felt (sorta) bad for the seller because I was willing to pay (say) $30 for a rock, but the second highest bidder was only willing to pay $1.50, so I got the rock for a ridiculous $2. Then the seller turned out to be a horse's-a$$, however (long story), so I didn't feel bad any more. I assume some sort of "highest offer" system would fix this but I've never used the "offer" system on ebay.

I see only one benefit for a sniping tool amd that is for when the auction ends at an inopportune time. Other than that I see no benefit. A sniping tool will only be effetive if the max bid loaded into it is high enough to beat the competition. I wonder what would happen if most bidders used a sniping tool. I am surprised Ebay is not offering everypone a sniping tool free of charge. If everyone used a siping tool I think the size of the winning bids would increase. Ebay gets a % of the winning bid in a final value fee. The bigger the bid the bigger the final value fee. I wonder what % of bidders now use a sniping tool. Stu
