Hello my name is Josh I moved to Michigan in the fall of 2013. My fiancé and I bought a new construction home and in the process of raking rocks out of the yard to plant grass seed I started finding a lot of rocks that I thought looked pretty cool so I kept what I can find (there are a lot of them) and put them up. I found this forum and have been reading a lot and I have been doing some research on gem/fossils and minerals. I would like to start rock hunting this summer. I am very new to this but I view these things as another one of Gods great master pieces and awe inspiring. Not really sure where to start but I guess I have more reading too do.

Welcome (from another Southeast Michigan member). Not sure of your exact location but a rock club is a great place to start. Me and my boys are members at the Macomb county club and Oakland county has one too. Ours has all the equipment and classes for rock tumbling, cabbing, wire wrapping, faceting and a few others. Heres a link to the club. www.mcgls.org/Chuck

Hi Josh. I'm from Northeast Michigan (Alpena). This is a great state for rock collecting. There are fossils, including Petoskey stones in my area, Chuck's favorite, pudding stone, and tons of stuff in the U.P. I love looking for rocks in Lake Superior because they're not covered in algae like in the other lakes. This is a great place to learn, don't be afraid to ask questions.

I am in lenawee county I live just outside Adrian, Mi. I am interested in tumbling, cutting and hunting for right now. Where would someone get the tools for this? A website or a store in Mi.

The Rock Shed is a good place for tumblers and grit. It's an online place, but is probably cheaper than buying in a store.
