I bought a few yellow blazer blades for a few of my smaller saws and finally tried my largest one out on my 18" saw... It stopped half way through a cut and burned out my motor:( Should I try getting the motor repaired or just buy a new one? I think it was 1/3 hp.

A power surge protector could have saved that motor. I'd go for a larger motor.

Yup, at the very least a 1/2 HP motor for an 18" saw.

Yep 1/2 HP Capacitor start and run with a thermal overload protection.

Can someone recommend a good source for a replacement? I rigged up an old motor but it runs backwards... can I just rewire the capacitor?

Most single phase motors will have a red and a black wire you switch to reverse. They will have slide on connections.

...And if there are a BUNCH of wires coming out of the motor, swap the orange and purple/lavender ones. Rick

I have a couple refurbed 1/2 horse motors sitting in the garage. They're already wired for reverse, and ready to go. When I got them they were all dirty and the cords were frayed, etc. Cleaned them up, replaced the wiring, and they run very well. No idea exactly how old they are, but they are the good old ones, not the cheap ones sold today. Probably not cheap to ship tho... Let me know if you're interested. Another course of action is a Harbor freight motor. I was looking that them yesterday, and their 1 HP is only about $120 or so, 1725 RPM, and reversable. made in China of course, so I'd probably buy the extra warranty if I bought one.

The HF motors are a 56 frame motor, most older rock saws took the smaller 48 frame motor. You should make sure it will mount on the saw or that you can fabricate a different mount.

That Franklin motor for $90 doesn't look too bad. It looks like it is a capacitor start , too. Bob
