OK... I have had a request from an Etsy customer.
I need to see if there is ANYONE who can help me source Obsidian... I know Tony (Catmandewe) has the rock. She is looking for:
an 8 x 10-ish slab, to fit into an 8 x 10" barnwood frame.... 2" thick or less. Doesn't have to be perfectly squared, but large enough to cover the 8 x 10 opening.
Polished, I think on one side.
It is for a Metaphysical project she is working on. She wants to sell it, framed. So our price has to be wholesale-ish.... I don't have the means to cut anything like that, or the means to polish it... I am not sure if it is even possible, at a cost that would be within reach, with shipping, and processing. I told her I would ask around.
If she does what she hope and sells it fast.... She may be back for more.
Let me know any thoughts....
Thanks in advance!!

Just my humble opinion, but, an 8x10x2 inch piece of polished Obsidian would be kind of heavy to frame, especially if it's going to be hung on a wall. You would need reinforced anchors in the wall and a good stout hook to hang it on.
As far as cutting it to size... anyone who has access to a 28-30 inch saw could cut it, but I don't know many who have one that big as it is a commercial unit, but there are a few out there who have them, you'll have to look around for that.polishing can be done on a richardson ranch dry sander, or a flat wet belt sander. I've seen units for done counter tops that are portable and could be used to grind/sand/polish the piece too.
Your biggest issue, once you find a piee big enough to get the slab from, is going to be getting it cut. If you get that done, I think the rest will fall into place pretty easily. A counter top store that does marble/granite could polish it for you, for a fee.
Good Luck with it ... keep us posted of your progress.

Yeah Mario,
I am aware of the difficulties, and implications. Her MAX request is 2" thick... I am not sure she knows how heavy it would/would be. I can probably get the obsidian from Tony Funk, but am not so sure I want to ship it all over the country to be cut and all....
There are so many and such a range of great people here, I thought I would toss it out for at least a reaction. The idea of a counter top place or even a monument company (just thought of that) is a good one. I am not sure she is going to want to pay the price, because after she pays whatever (expensive) processing it wold be, she will then have to mark it up.
Thanks for your input.

Thanks Phil,
She wants black. My bigger concern is the polish part. I have all sorts of and flavors of the stuff, just not big enough, and if it was big enuf, I couldn't polish it any way...lolol.

Emory Coons at the link I gave you can do it. Won't be cheap tho.

I can do it but it won't be cheap because in order to get one that big it will have to come from a boulder that is over 200 lbs, the cutting is not such a problem but I don't care for polishing.

Thanks you guys, I don't think she had any real idea of what she was asking for. I passed the information to her, along with a little of *my knowledge*..... Limited as it is...lolol... I have sent her in a different direction .... This is on a bet for her.... and She needs to re-think her commitment to her need for "Real" obsidian.
Thanks for your help, and input. I appreciate it.

My wife does Scrimshaw on 8 x 10 x 1/4 in black glass that is available from most glass shops and shops that handle leaded glass supplies ( stained glass ) Not much pricier than regular window glass.

Thanks again guys... I bowed out of the project. Way too much work, for what I saw as much potential value. If she can get it, she will work just as hard as me for it.

the absolute black granite offered by parfive is already cut and polished.
The project just got doable.

Is Black Granite actually Black Obsidian?? It's not granite nor obsidian. I thinks it's a form of fine grained gabbro, some of them have what look like actinolite crystals (Black Galaxy). Does it have to be natural? Or can it be man made obsidian?

Hello fellow rock people. This kind of thread really wasn't the type I wanted to introduce myself with...A buy and sell thread...I've been a rock nut for ages and was planning what I consider a more appropriate first post with some photos of my most recent rock tumble. Well, I've still got a week or two left to wait for that to finish so no photo contributions just yet, but the OP's plea for a large-ish obsidian order was driving me crazy, and I just couldn't stand by in lurker mode without responding. mnblarneystone, I'm currently sitting on all kinds of the volcanic glass. Mostly boulders anywhere from 5-50 lbs or so...It's everywhere around here. I trip over the stuff. People use it for landscaping rocks. Perhaps I could assist you. Unless you've completely abandoned your project. Either way, I love this board and have been lurking without joining for way too long. Lots of good info and people here! -Chris

Boy, I wish I could find ME some huge boulders of volcanic glass. Bet I could sell 'em for a ton of money, better than the Lakers I'm trying to find a home for, I'm sure.

Well, maybe once I get a little more established around here, we could do some tradin'. I'd be more interested in a trade anyway, I think. Certainly not looking to gouge anybody.

No, I don't think you're looking to gouge anybody, washingtonrocks. My post was actually in reference to some of the difficulties I'm having in getting someone interested in what I have to offer. It all frustrates me, because I haven't a clue what people want. Sorry about the misunderstanding.

No worries, MrCoffee. I guess my gouge comment was in regards to those that might think the newbie just joined to make a buck or two off of his rocks. Whatcha have to offer specifically? There's all kinds of agates around my neck of the woods, but nothing quite like those Lakers! Do you have something posted you can direct me to? Oops. Nevermind, found it. Best of luck to ya.
