I'm Jonathan from New York. Not New York City like many people think when I introduce myself to strangers. I have recently rediscovered my passion for rocks and creating jewelry from them. I am just starting to polish some raw material again and I can not wait to learn more from everyone on this board.
I've purchased some rough stones from the rock shed, but I'm looking for a bit more of a variety. Where might I try next, as there isn't anyplace local to purchase stuff from?

Welcome Jonathan- are you looking for rocks to tumble or larger rough rocks to cut or rocks that have already been sliced?

I'm just looking for rocks to tumble right now. I only have a tumbler, but would like to get into more as I have the time and funds to do so. Right now I have about 1.5 pounds of Amethyst and Rutilated Quartz in the 1st stage in my Lortone 33B. I would like to experiment with already sliced rocks to make cabs to wire wrap.

Welcome noob, from CA! See if you can find any local rock and mineral clubs in your area. Usually clubs put on shows where members sell rough, or even better, offer rockhounding trips. Nothing like working with rough you find yourself. Also, keep an eye on the buy-sell-swap-shop forum here. I've gotten some amazing rough from RTH members

Welcome. As Dee said, try and pick up some material from the RTH members. I've got quite a bit of Silver Lace Onyx if you're interested.
Looking forward to your creations.

Hello from Michigan. I've been tumbling for a couple of years, and I've bought very little rough from retail stores like the Rock Shed (although the stuff I've purchased from the Rock Shed had been great). I either pick my own rocks, buy rocks here on RTH, or trade rocks here. I think I get the most satisfaction from the rocks I find myself. There's something about picking a rock out of the lake or off the ground and turning it into something beautiful. If you get them out of a lake or river, there's the added bonus of them being mostly rounded before you even start. It saves a ton of time in the rough stage.

I don't have anything to trade right now and there isn't much for me to fi d in my part of NY other than granite, shale, and flint, I think. I am willing to trade money for rough stones and slabs. I am really excited to get into this hobby. Thank You to all of the welcomes. Send me a PM if anyone has some good deals on a variety of rough tumblers and slabs.

Flint polishes nicely. Does the flint in your area have any banding?

Not that I have noticed, but it has been a long while since I've taken the time to look. Now I have to wait until spring.
