Putting a small ad in a local tourist oriented magazine and need some help wording it. I get the "Handcrafted Silver Jewelry" alright, but how to word something short and sweet about cutting and polishing my own stones? Lapidary or lapidarist will escape most folks not familiar with rocks. All I could come up with was "Precious and semi precious gemstones". Ideally it should be a bit shorter than that, so how can one make up some fancy words for "rock cutter"?

I am pretty good at ad copy, but I think I need more info.
What do you call what you do? Are you a jeweller, lapidary, artist....?
Unique handcrafted jewelry featuring exquisite precious and semiprecious stonework by "radio".

Unfortunately, I need to keep the description short, sweet and clear as possible to those who do not know what "lapidary" means The closest description of what I am/do would be Silversmith and Lapidarist. I design and hand make rings, pendants and bracelets the old school way with a strong Native American influence and don't do much of the artsy fartsy "Artisan" or "Modern" type jewelry. Besides, I've told myself that if I ever describe myself as an "Artist" and work in a "Studio" that I will have to charge a whole heckuva lot more for my pieces Guess I must be suffering a professional identity crises, eh?

'Heirloom' might be a good key word to throw in your ad. "One of a kind heirloom jewelry".. something special enough they can pass down for generations.
Just a thought

why not be artist and studio and charge more for your precious metalwork? Guess I'm a bit too modest and don't like to toot my own horn, besides, I've never been one to brag on myself or puff out my chest and say See what I did/can do". As long as I make a reasonable profit I'm happy and my customers are happy. It's a constant struggle to price each piece I put in the showcase or quote a custom job. The Craft Mall I have the shop in takes a percentage of sales, so have had to adjust prices upward to cover that. Those who recognize the quality don't quibble at the prices

Thanks all for the good suggestions. It's kinda hard to come up with a classy sounding alternate name for Lapidary, isn't it?

Perhaps in my youth I would have pursued fame and fortune a bit harder. I'm older now and disability forced an early retirement, so I can pursue things that make me happy and bring in some extra dollars to supplement the social (in)security. Moving my shop out of the home and into a retail location really lit a fire under my butt and caused me to become much more organized and motivated. I'm not easily corrupted by fame or money like a lot of folks, and as a result I have no conscience nagging me and keeping me awake at night Just before Christmas, I actually had a guy offer me a $100 bill to move his order to the front of the line. I refused the bribe, but still managed to get his piece done by the date needed. It was repairing a small ring he had given his wife before they were married and they were renewing their vows after 30 years of marriage, so this ring had a lot of special meaning to them both. After loosing the stone many years ago, she put it in her jewelery box and forgot about it, so he dug it out and wanted a similar stone set so he could surprise her. No way could I have taken the extra $100 and had a clear conscience.

No way could I have taken the extra $100 and had a clear conscience. No matter what. No matter if you seek fame and fortune or a decent living in a humble establishment. No matter the path...... Integrity always wins. People can smell integrity, they can feel it. They want to do business with folks like that. I have approximately 30 minutes in a clients home to measure and estimate their kitchen work. While I am chatting I must earn their confidence to such a degree they will be comfortable writing an $8,000-12,000 check. I could not succeed if they were even a tiny bit worried about dishonesty. Radio you are a good man. Successful already.
