Happens in coral country all the time. The most unpredictable material. You almost never know when it is hollow. The bright white botyroidal cavity is common. Looks like metal salts snuck in on the inside and the outside leaving the colored edge. Outside coating is also botyroidalized. Heat treated. I see one fracture at 12 o'clock it the thinnest section. Coulda been the hammer...

When you figure out how to peek inside please share! I try tapping geodes gently - always cracks the good ones. Now I leave the hammer In the tool bag. Prying and digging only. Have to wait for the saw.

Have to wait for the saw. I have to crack a window out to see if the color is good. I window 20 and get one w/color. Probably get 1.5 out of 20 with psuedomorphed cavity. Hammer in the bag solves messing them up.

That crack looks pretty black, likely was there, sounds good anyway. Is a very nice piece. Larry

It's gorgeous. Just mount it on a piece of price iron for display as is.

James, you cannot make a window with a pillow; you need the hammer!
I agree with Scott --- it's gorgeous as is.

Happens to all people i take. It is funny in that one of them is scared to hit anything and comes home with nothing. Ha My wife and i get into fights on the river. If one picks up a coral and holds it up and it takes 2 minutes for the water to dribble out a mud fight ensues. Because that is often a trophy geode. We are competitive and spiteful. I always let her win.
