The cabs are finished, mostly:), still need to back bevel. All but my wifes are typical 18 by 25 ovals but I wanted to have them all the same for the girls. I thought the best way was to make a video so I have my first video on youtube now. You need about 5 minutes to watch it all. Thanks for looking Hi everyone, I am making rings for all the remaining females on my side of the family, wife, daughter, (future possible grand daughter:)), 2 nieces and 3 great nieces and a sis in law. 9 rings in total, all except my wife will be 18 by 25 ovals, wifes next size larger. The ovals are not fixed in stone I may free form them but they will be at least that big. I bought some super labradorite from our own Carleton and that is what I am showing you first, just the slabs. There are a couple other pieces but I did not get decent pictures. I have way more than enough for 9 cabs so have lots of choices. As you can see from my not so great images that the quality of Carleton's material is second to none:) Thanks Carleton for being part of this. I will keep this updated as I build the rings. Thanks for looking! NEXT PIECE IS SO MUCH BETTER IN HAND!!!!!

You've marked out some great cabs. I'm looking forward to following your progress to the finish.

Those are great slabs. Are you going to treat the cabs at all, use epoxy?

Thanks everyone,
Tim I an not planning to treat the slabs at all, they are very stable and hard. A couple of them are end cuts and I think I am going to have to "build" up a flat base using liquid steel or some product like that. Any suggestions welcome please.

If you make a doublet of the same material it will all expand and contract together and have less tendency to pull apart. A quartz cap may be a good solution. I once made caps of very light blue aquamarine that was very reasonably priced.

Thanks Dave,
Have optical quartz for doublets but I don't think labradorite needs a cap for protection does it? I have made a couple ring stones out of low quality lab before and it seems to be good. The couple of end cuts I can't put a back on with stone as, well they are end cuts LOL. I will just put a layer of liquid steel on them and go with that. I need to get moving on that project but I have a few others in the fire right now to get done first:) Thanks for the suggestions though, keep em coming!

No, Quartz has a hardness of 7, Feldspar of 6, which is hard enough. I was thinking about making a doublet (bottom rather than the top)to make the stone thicker. The liquid steel I have used in the past only had a shelf life of about 6 months, even in the can.

Tom, thanks for the video! You really need video to show those kind of stones off. I think you have a winner in each one. I couldn't pick a fav, but it looks like the boss's is about the best. I have some labs from Carleton, too. I haven't cabbed them, yet, though. I can't wait to see what you do for the rings. I bet they'll be great! Are you doing each one differently?

I'm with Tela, the video really adds a lot, thanks for doing that and for sharing. Looking forward to seeing the rings!

Thanks guys, each ring will be just a bit different. John, the obsidian is just to make them thicker, I had thin slices on hand and as the Ob will be enclosed in silver I am not worried about the strength. I hope to have them all done in the next week or so.
